Talked to a defensive coach about 3-4

3-4 requires certain type of personnel of front seven and I somewhat doubt Dolphins have that at the moment. What worries me is that Jason Taylor for example doesn't really fit into that scheme.

Jason taylor doesnt need to fit in the scheme. He is a freak of nature. A guy hi size shouldnt be gettting double digit sacks every year. They talked bad about him when he first came out of akron on how undersized he was and now look.

So dont say he doesnt fit the mold cuz Taylor can do it all..

Hopefully next year we get atleast a 2nd rounder fot JT cuz I just don't see him wanting to serve his talents in an area where he can't be as successful. He's a prototypical RE in a 4-3 alignment. Could you imagine the Colts asking Freeney to become a stand-up rush LB? Jt is aging and we might as well get something for him and cut the cap down. Now if he plays some 3-4 and is successful than my thinking may change. He certainly didn't have a problem standing and rushing up the middle on that play they designed for him which worked against the Ravens a couple of years back.

So when did the idea of trading Taylor came up. Stop with the trading taylor idea...teams dont give up top DE when we have no proven players in the wings...

I second that!!! If you're a great football player, you'll still make plays no matter what scheme you're in.

thats right! All Taylor does is make plays...I remeber him literally taking over the Raiders game. The guy is a one man show..

It still depends upon the make-up of your roster. Your DL & LB's may be better suited to stop the run ina 3-4 than a 4-3 (i.e. bigger & slower DL & LB's). But in our case, yes I agree, we're probably better suited to stop the run by playing a 4-3 based upon the personnel of the current team. We have no true NG on this team and the LB's are still smallish.

the make up of the roster is what makes the difference between a good defense and a bad defense. A good 3-4 team will be better against the run than a bad 4-3 team, while a good 4-3 team will be better against the short pass than a bad 3-4 team. With all things being equal, and you have two teams of equal talent to the positions that are needed for each scheme, generally the 4-3 will be better against the run.

"GENERALLY" is the key word there. NE has the personnel to run either scheme and they've showed they stop the run better when they play the 3-4. A 3-4 is still more complicated for an O-Line to block, run or pass. It's not impossible for a 3-4 team to be better than a great 4-3 team against both the run AND the short pass. NE did not go to a 3-4 to stop the short pass - they switched more frequently to a 3-4 because they were run over in prior years when they were in a 4-3.
