In today's NFL it is a key ingredient to success of an NFL team.

Tannehill strangely has so many positives - he's tough, he's smart, he's accurate, he's athletic, he is a good enough leader...

His pocket presence is atrocious.

I think of pocket presence as a Jedi thing - you either have it or you do not.

Tannehill will not last in the NFL because of it...

Its a miracle he's been as healthy as he is...the hits he takes...

Many of the QB's thriving in this league do so well because the understand when and how to maneuver in the pocket to avoid danger....

Frankly T-hill seems oblivious - he gets into a tunnel vision that seems almost weird....I mean he does not even glance to his blind side....

Delay blitzes have him getting tanked - and opposing NFL coordinators are saving their best for last....

I am really depressed by Tannehill's lack of pocket presence because it means we get humiliated week in and week out when it counts the most....

Also our offensive coordinators seem as oblivious to this T-hill weakness as does T-hill to his lack of awareness - If he is that vulnerable to delayed blind side blitzes - roll him out.... help him look for cues, do a Russell Wilson, buy some time....Especially when the game is on the line....

One more first down and the Eagles never see the ball again - yet the pass T-hill threw while standing in the pocket - oblivious to blind side pursuit as always was 2 yards short of a first down - why throw it...Instead buy time in the pocket and make something happen and win the f...ing game!!!

This is not all his fault though considering after 4 years our offensive line is still mediocre.

The franchise has been woefully neglectful of going all out in fixing this wide open wound for years and years....

Did you see that blindside sack that hit him helmet/shoulder to the lower back during the play that resulted in a safety in the end zone?
He was crushed. I am surprised he doesn't have spinal or internal injuries.
I am surprised he was able to get back up, let alone lead the Fins to victory.
He has taken more sacks than any QB over the last 4 years. He gets blown up several times a game.
Fix the oline, and then we can have a discussion about pocket presence.

I truly believe tannehill is the toughest qb in the nfl, the amount of hits he takes is just absolutely insane...even when he gets off a pass hes picking himself up off the ground on almost every play it seems....hes one tough SOB thats for damn sure

Couple things to add to Langer_72's support:

1. Russel Wilson for all of his presence has been sacked almost as much as Ryan since 2012.

2. "one more first down" - yes, true. But he did lead us from our 3 yard line out to the 30-35ish, picked up 2 FDs I think and allowed us to punt it further away from FG range. While he's no Marino, this is the exact situation we used to blow it when he played here - no run game and we'd punt from our goal line - set the other team up at our 40. Then Dan would have to go back out and win it.

Point is, he helped secure the win by flipping the field position just enough to allow us to go out and play D to close out the game.

Imagine being in a play where the opposing defense has multiple gap blitzes coming and you see it but aren't allowed to do anything about it. Yeah....I am beginning to wonder if the problem is and hasn't been Lazor all along.

Tannehill has always had VERY POOR pocket presence. And as the OP mentions, it's very unfortunate because he has soooo many positives. I thought, because of his lack of reps at the QB position, he would start to develop a better natural "feel" for the game and the pocket. But it hasn't happened... at all. I see almost no growth at that part of his game over the past few seasons.

There were moments in years past - the Packers game last season comes to mind - when he has looked COMFORTABLE and in CONTROL of the pocket. Sliding around, adjusting in the pocket, using his feet to take a few steps one way to get a clean passing lane... it was moments like that that got me excited - it is his biggest and most noticeable flaw and the only thing holding him back from being a very productive player. I saw him have a few games like that last season which got me excited because he was showing growth... But I've seen that literally zero times this season. It's alarming, it's his biggest knock and, if he doesn't magically start improving, will be the reason he never ascends past being a "decent" QB.

His tough for sure, tough as nails, but Big Ben gets that title, he survived a crash on a huyabusa with no helmet, got his leg destroyed and came back like 4 weeks later, then comes back early again last week. Hell he even RAPED a girl! Can Tannehill say any of that!? Nope! ;)

Ryan's pocket presence is not terrible; I don't even think it's bad. It's one of the Finheaven bogeymen, just like the deep ball stuff. How's Mike Wallace doing on deep stuff in Minnesota, by the way? Oh...

I think if you want to point to an area of very real concern with Tannehill right now, it's that his footwork looks like it's regressing a bit. Some of that might be due to the injuries he's dealing with and the turmoil surrounding the team, or maybe that they've brought in a new offensive coach to work with him, but that's the thing I'm worried about right now. It's affecting his accuracy.

I love how people claim he has horrible pocket presence when he is getting lit up from his blind side. It is called blind side for a reason. He is thinking Albert, or whoever, has his back and is picking up that guy off the end. When he gets drilled in the back it is because he has no idea the guy is there. That isn't pocket presence...that is not having eyes in the back of your head. Sorry, last time I checked nobody has that.

Unfortunately I have grown to believe Lazor is a bigger culprit then I initially thought when it comes to Tannehill not picking up the protection at the LOS.

Because I used to see it before and I don't think, unless one of our amazing o-line missed their blocks, he'd miss free rushers coming at him.

Is this a function of David Carr syndrome. Easy for someone to toss aside but like any position those hits are cumulative in their affect. You guys can bash Tannehill all you want and he has some demerits as a qb but until this oline situation is figured out to at least dress an average line, Tannehill will always be running for his life and will end up with happy feet and rushed decisions most of the time.
