Armando's latest article that Hayden Fox posted, "Investment on Tannehill probably won't include spending on a Guard" (link here) has generated a lot of buzz around FH. For good reason, we all know it would be silly for the team to rely on Dallas Thomas going into the year. I wanted to go over the quotes that were actually given by Tannenbaum and emphasize how much of stretch it is for Armando Salguero to conclude we will not beef up our line through free agency and/or the draft. The article only contains TWO quotes from Tannenbaum which I will go over, but first, I would like to put these quotes a little more in context. Armando posted another article today that features more quotes from Tannenbaum, most likely, from the same interview. (Click here for the article) In this article,"Miami convinced rebuild on the fly will work", Tannenbaum recalls his time in New York under Bill Parcells in 1996.
Tannenbaum now relates his experience in NY to his current challenge in Miami. Tannenbaum says the Dolphins should emphasize player development (a good thing) but lets keep in mind the article title: "Dolphins will probably not add a guard". How does an emphasis on development from within point to NO additions?? Lets continue.. quote two:
Tannenbaum admits here in the second quote that there are questions about guard play. But keeping with the theme of the entire conversation, he emphasizes development from within. I ask again, how does this point to a low probability in additional free agents or draft picks?
...it doesn't. Armando is drawing his own conclusions here. Why did he split up one interview from Tannenbaum into two seperate articles? Filler? To rile up fans? Either way, it is fair to say that this is contrived, media nonsense. This is some seriously poor reporting. Here he takes essentially coach-speak from Tannenbaum and turns it into a statement on the future of the OL of the Dolphins.
The truth is, there has been one time, to my knowledge, that Tannenbaum addressed the needs of the Dolphins, on the Joe Rose show.
Lets not forget the Dolphins were linked to David Harris right at the start of FA, so the need for LB is a little more than just "depth".
I expect the same at OL. Please take ANYTHING Armando says with a grain of salt.
“If any team in the history of football or any sport could have said, ‘We need three years to blow it up and start over, it would have been Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick in ’97,” Tannenbaum said during a break in the NFL owners’ meetings. “If they’d said, ‘Hey what they did last year was historic, we need time,” everyone would have understood.
In this last quote, Tannenbaum is emphasizing the need to develop from within. Fast forward to Armando's buzz-worthy article, "Investment in Tannehill wont include a Guard". Remember I said there were only TWO quotes from Tannenbaum. Here is quote one:“But we won nine games the next year. We lost to the Detroit Lions in the last game or we would have made the playoffs. And that taught me first hand there are no excuses for bad contracts or bad picks. You need to win for today and develop for tomorrow.”
"To me one of the best parts about our sport is the untold player development," Tannenbaum said. "So maybe we're sitting here in a year or two and you're saying, 'How can you not have Dallas Thomas or Billy Turner?' They could be the next Mike Iupati in free agency.

"They are two young guys that have great potential. How do we know they won't be the two young guys you have to keep. Maybe they're not household names today but we have two great tackles we feel good about, we have a great center and we have questions about the guard play. You have to develop from within."

#Dolphins VP Mike Tannenbaum on Joe Show asked where team has most needs right now: WR, CB, OL depth, LB depth
