Tannehill off to a good start with Philbin

If he isnt ready then yeah..he should sit. But if he is the best QB in camp and preseason...then he should start. You build your team around the QB...he needs to be part of the gelling you are talking about.

This.

Training camp and (especially) preseason will tell us all we need to know. If he looks good making those zone reads in the middle of the field he's going to have the inside track, due his knowledge of the playbook. Remember how Steve Young always said it takes most quarterbacks three years to become proficient in the WCO? Tannehill has already had two, which is two more than the other QBs on our roster.

The other consideration has nothing to do with Tannehill at all. It's the Roethlesberger Factor: if you have a good running game and a stout defense you can start a rookie and protect him by not asking him to throw for 300 yards a game. If our new zone rushing attack looks great with all the new parts on the offensive line AND the defense makes a smooth transition to the 4-3 by end of preseason, I'd feel a lot better about starting Ryan Tannehill in Week 1. If these elements don't pan out (or are even a bit shaky), I agree - let him sit for now until they do.

Win, Loose or Draw Miami finally took a shot in round one and that was all I was asking. I love the pick and wish the kid the all the success the two former 1st round picks had in Miami.

Speed of the game is completely different. He could know the playbook inside and out but still be unprepared for a good defense. Starting him against Wade Phillips Houston defense would not be the best start to his career.

Also we have protection issues. As bad as it sounds, if we are going to give up sacks id rather have it happen with our journeyman qb's and not our potential franchise quarterback. John Beck went into a shell shock in '07. Trent Edwards turned into a checkdown artist, in part, because of the Bills horrid line. And, most recently, Blaine Gabbert cant take his eyes off the offensive line because hes so concerned about being hit(though hes always had this problem apparently).

Tannehill isnt the only one learning. Our offensive line is still gelling and our receivers are learning a new system. Id rather be careful with Tannehill than throw him to the wolves to soon. I mean, lets face it, even the most optimistic have to admit we arent making a superbowl run next season.
I'm still trying to figure out why Cam Cameron didn't turn the reigns over to Beck after the bye week instead of giving it to him on the road at Philadelphia. I know he said something like starting Beck at home would have been putting too much pressure on him. Which makes no sense to me...but to start him against that Eagles blitz happy defense?

Kinda scary that he knew the playbook within 3 hours!

I think Philbin might agree with you.

(On QB Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M, and his familiarity with the offensive playbook) – “Well, I was a little shocked when (assistant quarterbacks coach) Zac Taylor came...they met at 7:00 and he came back at 10:00 and said they were done. The guy’s already done. I said, gee, Zac, three hours and the kid knows the whole playbook. We might need to spend more time in coaches’ meetings if this is the problem. We’ve been here three months and the guy’s learned the offense in three hours.

I think its going too be hard NOT too let him start somewhere during the season. This guy is a player and if he ready for it then he should get the chance. He is very mature and loves the game, the only thing he hates is riding the bench!

I think he is gonna win the starting job. I could be wrong, but I think his comfort level with Mike Sherman means they will be willing to throw him out there day one.

I don't think a guy who was willing to swap from QB to WR as an 18-19 year old and who demonstrated he could take those hits is gonna be intimidated by the speed of the game.

I think Moore is going to have a little trouble in this O with throwing crisp passes to recievers on the fly and Philbin might like to make a serious move in preseason. Just a thought. thats all it is.

We’ve been here three months and the guy’s learned the offense in three hours. Again, I don’t know how many guys – I was talking to Kim Bokamper early this morning – how many guys were drafted today, two hundred fifty seven? I would guess that two or three other guys in the whole draft felt as comfortable as Ryan Tannehill did walking into a building. I would guess. And it may not have been anyone else, but there certainly weren’t a lot of guys that would have had the comfort level that he did today. And I think that’s good for a little while. Because he’s such a competitor, I don’t think it’s going to be an issue. I know we aren’t getting a complacent player because he feels like he knows a couple of people. That’s really the exact opposite. The only reason he’s here is because of his competitive nature and athletic ability. I think he and Zac…they met last night, they met this morning before you guys met with him at 10:00, he had already put in a good morning’s work. I think he’ll be off to a good start.”

Couldn´t be more exited about this kid, he is being put into a good situation, this just might work out for us!!

like that he is already hitting it, not assuming himself to be a backup

Love the fact that he learned a very complicated and entricate playbook in three hours, but let Moore and Garrard get the snot beat out of them this season. I can live with Tannehill sitting for a year.

What worries me is how Thrh talk about his athletic ability so much as to why we got him

Basically, yeah. I like Matt Moore but he is a terrible, terrible fit for this offense. I could be wrong, but everything I've seen leads me to believe that is the case.

imo all of our OL is the same except , RT and imo training camp should be enough for our new RT to get his strenght in his right legs build up and be ready by preseason to let us know about where we are stand , and the kid we drafted from standford is a very very smart guy and imo wont take long at all to gel with the rest of our OL so i say by the end of preseason our offence line should be in very good shape and we are going to have one of the best OL in the NFL just wait and see , its gonna be sick.:hump: only thing with tanny he needs more experence at QB, and if he isnt ready to play by regular season then let him sit until he gets comfy . because imo he will be our franchise QB and he will be a very good one .
