“With this offense, we're going to mix things up,” said Tannehill. “We're going to move quickly at times, snap the ball quickly. At other times, we're going to get up to the line quickly and take our time. At other times we're going to huddle and be like a standard offense. Just the variability and the versatility that this offense has, and the different things that we can do to create the drives that we want."

And Gase isn’t going to hesitate in trusting Tannehill to change the call at the line of scrimmage if he sees that the original call just isn’t going to work.

"I'm still the same quarterback,” Tannehill said. “Obviously, having that freedom to get the offense in a good play - we do a lot of things differently now. Being able to be on the line of scrimmage and adjust, whether its protections, routes, a whole new play. There's a lot of freedom in what we do … We're not going to have to sit on our heels and feel like the defense is coming after us, and we have to figure out a way to make it work. We can put pressure on the defense by getting in a good play and always keeping the heat on the defense."

Not only will Gase allow Tannehill to make changes during games, but he is also encouraging Tannehill to think more like a coach in game situations and to become comfortable enough with the entire playbook that he can then improvise and make this offense his own.

"It's an important thing, for sure. It's fun for me to be able to dive in and take ownership of the offense (and) being able to learn it like a coach. That's ultimately what I want to do: I want to be a guy on the field that anyone on the field can come to and ask a question, and I have the answers. I’m still in that learning process, but trying to get through that as quickly as I can, so that I am that guy that everyone can look to on the field and ask me a question and know exactly what they have.

“That's part of being a leader - knowing what everyone needs, and (being) available for them when they need help."

It's about damn time we had a coaching staff that believes in its players and gives them the associated responsibilities that goes along with it. I can't wait to see the new look offense and the control Tannehill has over it. With the skill players this offense has Tannehill should be able to exploit mismatches all over the place.

I like this alternative, because the last four years, despite stats going up, the product needs to be better

About ****ing time....

One of the smarter individuals in the NFL...really excited to see a coach allow this kid to play.

I'm in wait and see mode. Not going to believe what he says until it happens on the field.

You mean he wasn't taking charge before? Actually explains a lot.

I don't know why people keep saying "finally". Tannehill had this kind of total free reign when Mike Sherman was the offensive coordinator, too.

It ain't a silver bullet.

He had it, but it was taken away by Lazor, which was just dumfounding...and one of the main reasons the offensive scheme failed last year.

It varied. Per report, at times he couldn't audible, at times only on specific plays, at times only TO specific plays. There were reports the last couple years the O players (plural) could tell a play wouldn't work but Tannehill had no authority to audible. I watched some games last year where the talking heads mentioned Tannehill calling audibles on some plays. If reports of unrestricted audibles are true and reports most on O could see a failed play, this is a big improvement.

He had the ability to be "in control" taken away because he wasn't very good with that power.

Tanny said it best. He's still the same QB. A guy who tricks a certain percentage of the fan base into believing he's the real deal.

Tannehill seemed to play fine in Lazor's first year. I guess the argument must be that if Tannehill had been able to audible that year we would have been... unstoppable?

Of all the reasons the offense failed last year "no free reign for the QB" is pretty far down the list. Unless you're gonna say that Tannehill could have audibled Dallas Thomas and Jason Fox off the field.

not allowing the qb to drive wasn't the problem with mike shermans o...the problem was the situational play calling and the tendency on short yardage to call the fullback dive when the entire league was sitting on it with lousaka polite

in addition to a serious lack of skill position talent especially at wr

Dumbfounding? He had his best season. In 2014 the Dolphins had the only offense in the top 8 without an elite QB, according to Football Outsiders rankings. Even in 2015 we were ranked 15th when Lazor was fired, then the offense plummeted in the rankings once again after Tannehill presumably got a lot more freedom.

I'm sure Kubiak made an exception for Manning but in the past he has been criticized for restricting his QBs ability to audible. Flacco said he enjoyed just running what was called and had his best season under Kubiak. It can work both ways.

Oh great.... this again.

You really do fail to grasp things don't you? This whole concept has been explained over and over and over.

Defenses caught on to the gimmicky crap of an offense we ran (compounded with other things).

But yeah, we definitely should have kept Lazor, because what we were doing was greatness! Oh and firing Philbin?! What a crap move, that man was a true coach.
