Tannehill vs. Jones

I've seen enough of Landry Jones to know I want no part of him unless he's sitting there with out 3rd pick or something. And there's not one scenario out there where I'm trading out of the 1st pick. Even for Barkley. Offer me 5 full drafts, don't care.
.

That much faith in Luck huh? I would want to see him with a shotty oline and a SEC defense before I turn down 5 full drafts . . . but I get what you are saying . . . and I agree with you.

Franchise QB's win in this league. If you have the chance at one, you don't trade him away for anything. Shoddy O-Line hasn't stopped Rothlisberger or Rodgers from winning. Or Peyton. Or Brady. And our OL won't be so shoddy when we hire a real coach who kicks Columbo's *** out the door the first day on the job and starts Garner. I wouldn't mind seeing him against LSU's defense, but I think I'd rather see Weeden since I feel we have more of a chance at him at this point. Plus, I have no doubt Luck would have no problems with LSU's defense anyways.

Heres another thing that needs to considered. Whoever is making our draft day selection next year is going to have an inordinate amount of pressure placed on them to get a franchise qb. Suppose we are picking 5ish and Luck is obviously gone and Barkley went back to school. Landry Jones is sitting there and you are going to have a fanbase screaming for that sexy name. They will see all the "draft experts" having Jones high up on their board, they will hear Kiper comparing him to Bradford and calling him a franchise qb and they will hear all the people on ESPN/NFL network raving about him.

If the phins brass dont see Jones as an answer they had better be damn sure that 1) he wont be that franchise qb 2) they will be able to get Weeden, Tannenhill, whomever later because if for some reason we pass on him and he turns out to be something we dont see than its gonna be hell all over again. Especially if we dont get another qb who can be seen as our future. If we take him and he fails, well we picked the best franchise qb prospect available in the beginning of round one and he flopped. We tried. But if we pass on him and he thrives the fanbase will be calling for heads. All the pundits will be screaming that the dolphins passed on a franchise qb again. Lets be honest, a majority of phins fans dont know Brandon Weeden from Brandon Frazier. Its easy for me to sit here and say that i dont want Jones, which i dont, but its gonna be another thing for our brass to pass on a top 10 prospect with a fan base starving for a franchise qb.

I dont want Jones, Im just saying the pressure on whoever is selecting will be immense and if they decide to sell us on a 28 year old rookie qb they had better be sure Jones isnt that guy.

That being said...if luck and barkley are gone im hoping for 1)Blackmon 2)Weeden

yep...there will be a ton of pressure on whoever takes over to take a qb with that top pick...and thats what i'm afraid of...landry jones on the board when our pick comes up and his physical skillset (which warrants a 1st round grade on its own merit) being the deciding factor in our draft room...

Tannehill is seeing his stock rise despite A&M struggling against any and all good teams (of course that's the Aggies MO, to suck against good teams). Chad Davis of Draft Breakdown has him going 10th overall (though he admits he doubts he goes that high, he says that the Skins are in love with him like they were in love with Jake Locker). And Scott Wright and the Draft Countdown crew have had Tannehill in the rising prospects articles for about a month and have also been saying he's got a boarderline 1st round grade. Walter Football also has him just outside the first round.

Now I have no problem taking a flyer on Tannehill if we can trade back a bit and get more picks as of right now. He's still a bit raw as a QB since he spent 2 and a half years as a WR with the Aggies. He can see himself fly up draft boards though.

If we don't end up with Luck and Barkley stays in school, I'm willing to take a chance on Jones. I mean he's not Sam Bradford as a prospect, but he isn't a BAD prospect by any means.

Of course, as I've said for awhile, I'm at the point where if the FO/coaching staff feels very strongly about a QB, I want to take the chance on him. Now I am not saying draft a QB for the sake of drafting a QB. What I am saying is if your offensive staff feels they can win games with a certain QB in the draft, you do what you have to do to secure that player. Sometimes you have to take that risk.

As for Brandon Weeden... Not a huge fan of drafting a guy who will be 29 in the early rounds of the draft. But again, if the coaching staff (whoever it is) decides that they can win with him, go for it.

I personally feel Nick Foles isn't getting enough attention either.

I don't think anyone is talking about him in the top 5 though. If we can't get Luck or Barkley, I wouldn't mind a playmaker like Blackmon in round 1 and then Weeden with our 2nd pick.
I like that idea, probably because I really think Blackmon is a great talent at wide receiver. Pairing him with Marshall could really be something special and would lessen the blow if Marshall implodes, a possibility that any general manager or coach must be prepared for.

Personally I think of Ryan Tannehill as a perfect player for the Colts to take and train on behind Peyton Manning. Tannehill is a guy you'll want to teach for a few years before you get him out there but he's got tremendous throwing talent and athleticism.
I really believe that Tannehill will be a big riser by the time the draft rolls around. I know he is so raw, but you can't teach a lot of what he already has. The more I watched tape last year, the more I liked Christian Ponder. Different prospects, but I'm getting that same feel for Tannehill. There are times that his play reminds me a lot of Aaron Rogers. Also times when he looks a lot like J.P. Losman. But I do think he's the one qb who will surprise a lot of people on draft day and go way higher than a lot of people would expect.

top 10 for tannehill...jeesh...thats a pure upside pick to me if thats the case...i'm more in line with the this kid needs time to sit and leanr behind a seasoned veteran to succeed than the just throw the kids to the wolves mindset...and with a top 10 pick given our qb situation you have to throw the kid to the wolves...at least it sure seems that way...or maybe its just me freaking tired of waiting for the position to play at a high level for us

Tannehill could rise far. I kind of have him viewed as this year's Christian Ponder in terms of draft value. Moving up quickly.

i did not like ponder in the top half of round 1 but to me he was much more nfl ready than tannehill will be when he comes out...

I really like Ponder and what he brings to the table.

As for Tannehill, some team will take the risk in the 1st for someone who has tons of potential.

from what i've seen of ponder thus far i've been impressed...that first game they threw him to the wolves down big against the pack i think it was he showed pretty damn well...avoided having his head taken off etc...god knows donavon mcnabb is washed the hell up

Only two QBs I liked last year was Ponder and Dalton (I was one of the few on here that liked him)...didn't like Locker, Didn't like Newton (obviously I was wrong on him, I know you liked him), didn't like Gabbert and I didn't like Kaepernick. I was willing to take Ponder and Dalton in the 2nd round...didn't expect Ponder to go 12th overall and Dalton went like 34th overall I think. Much earlier than I expected.

props thus far on dalton...although imo his upside is like ryan fitzpatrick level...

slimm just told me in pm he thinks morris claibornes the best defensive player in the draft...i think i'm gonna have to agree with that...ck others...thoughts??? we miss on luck or barkley maybe we pluck this kid with that top pick and come up for a qb from early 2nd to the 20's in round 1

of course ck won't like hearing this but i'd take sean smith off the boundary and plug this kid in his place in a heartbeat...

I certainly wouldn't mind adding a Morris Claiborne and I don't care if he does take Sean Smith's place. I think it would be a competition though, because between Vontae Davis, Will Allen, Sean Smith, Jimmy Wilson and Morris Claiborne I think you'd be surprised how the final secondary ends up shaking out and who exactly is relegated to the bench.

I was never in favor of moving Sean Smith to safety for his first couple of years in the league because he was too new to the league and new to defense in general. But now that he's no puppy anymore I'm interested in seeing what he can do on the inside. Either that or I'd like to see what he could do in more of a Cover 2 defense. But Vontae Davis, I'm just not sure what to do with him. He's his own worst enemy, and he's been the worst cornerback on the Dolphins this year. Worse than Sean Smith, Will Allen and Jimmy Wilson, even worse than Nolan Carroll.
