Using the current state of quarterbacks in the AFC as a template I created the following scale:
Class A: Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Elite quarterbacks both sure fire first ballot Hall of Famers.
Class B: Andrew Luck in early stages of pre-elite quarterback status.
Class C: Joe Flacco, Phillip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger. Great/Good quarterbacks capable of putting up big numbers and carrying their teams to big wins.
Class D: Alex Smith and Andy Dalton. Good/Solid quarterbacks, but need the defense or running games to really win big games.
Using those top eight quarterbacks as a guide, I only see three other AFC quarterbacks with a chance of reaching any of these levels. Ryan Tannehill, Derek Carr and Blake Bortles. Tannehill is far ahead of Carr and Bortles, mostly because of two full seasons on NFL experience. The Jets, Bills, Browns, Titans and Texans don't currently have quarterback capable of even reaching the Class D level in my opinion.
Using this as scale to judge quarterbacks that are in the league and those that will be drafted, I see Tannehill as having the potential of being a Class C quarterback in the near future, but unlikely to ever reach Class A or B. At this point I don't see a Class A or B quarterback in the college ranks either.
Obviously finding a Manning, Brady or Luck is a very rare case. While you might draft a Marcus Mariotta with hopes that he could reach Class B, but in reality I think a realistic goal for him would be to reach Class C status.
Does anybody think Tannehill has a chance of ever becoming a better quarterback than where Flacco, Rivers or Roethlisberger are currently? And do you see any of the current crop of college quarterbacks as having the potential of becoming a Manning, Brady or even Luck level of quarterback?
