As Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill continues his development, the team has him working on developing one specific type of throw that, when done properly, is even harder to defend than Mr. Miyagi’s crane kick.

Tannehill is working to master the back-shoulder fade throw.

“It takes commitment just like anything else,” coach Joe Philbin told reporters on Sunday regarding Tannehill’s new project. “If you’re going to be good at something then you have to practice it and you have to devote time to it and repetitions to it and you have to feel like you have the right chemistry with the right receivers.”

Don’t expect to see it on a regular basis, even if Tannehill masters it.

“I think it’s obviously team-specific and sometimes it’s game plan specific,” Philbin said, “maybe it’s better against a certain corner, it’s obviously better against certain coverages and all that stuff, but I think all teams make their decisions based on that, ‘Do we have the guys that throw it well? Do we time it well and catch it well? Does it make sense against what they’re doing?’ amongst some other things.”

Philbin knows a thing or two about a quarterback who knows how to make that throw. Before becoming the head coach in Miami, Philbin served as offensive coordinator for Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

So why does it work for Rodgers?

“I think because of a lot of the things I just talked about, the commitment to it, the time, the repetitions, other things and certainly good chemistry,” Philbin said.

How Philbin doesn't get credit around here for his obvious player development skills is beyond my understanding. He's had a hand in developing the #1 QB in the game and an up and coming top 5.

Oh and then there's this thing due partly to his credit too.

That's the money throw. He gets that down pat with some touch, he will be complete

He threw back shoulder his first 2 years...i think its more about comfort with the route combos in the new offense than a skill that needed development on the qbs part

In other words id expect it to be a strength like many other ones he has

Seems like there is a portion of fans who believe if you are not a total hard ass, you can't be useful football coach. Apparently alot of folks felt the same way about Bill Walsh. Not being the ultimate guru of quality coaching myself, I trust the multitudes of coaches and players from GB and elsewhere who praise him, vs the internet gurus who keep bringing up "queasy" from a moment of honest self-criticism.

Thought so too. We have seen Tannehill throwing the back shoulder pass already.

I think He has done some really good things and developing the guys Hicky brings in is one of them. However, if he has in game "queasyness" or keeps giving opposing teams time outs at the wrong time, it will continue to cost this team. I am rooting for him to get it, but that is easier said than done.

There have been some questionable instances in final game time moments, but that situation is overblown. As in, hurricane force winds overblown. Player performance has been more at question in those times than Philbin calling a TO and hopefully as a team we can iron out them out as those players aren't here anymore.

I dont think he has had WRS/TES with the size to pull that off until this year.
And we only have two of them.
And one is on the mend
