Woody Johnson finally realized he was an abject failure as a GM, but because he liked him, wanted to put him in charge of the cap, more or less Dawn's job. Unfortunately for Tannenbaum, the attractive GM prospects, including their present GM, wanted no part of him being anywhere in the building, so he was kicked to the curb. Consequently, no one else in the league wanted any part of him as a GM so he had to resort to sports agency to stay close to the league.

That's of course until an even more clueless owner than Woody in Ross salvaged him off the junk heap -a fired GM who presumably would have been happy accepting the demotion, in his infinite wisdom deciding to entrust the welfare and future of the franchise to this bozo.

Jets explore potential GMs, look to keep Tannenbaum in cap job

The Jets are reaching out to potential GM candidates while exploring ways to keep current GM Mike Tannenbaum in a cap management role, according to league sources.

The Jets are trying to beef up their front office, particularly in personnel, given their failing in the draft and free agency in recent years. But owner Woody Johnson is looking for a way to keep Tannenbaum in a different capacity, primarily as a negotiator/cap guy, sources said. The team has quietly reached out to potential candidates to gauge interest in the bizarre arrangement, including approaching Mike Maccagnan, Houston's director of college scouting.

As expected, candidates have significant issues with the parameters, sources said. Tannenbaum has created many of the Jets issues with bloated contracts given to players like Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes, to name two, coupled with cap mismanagement that has left New York in a difficult plight heading into 2013. Furthermore, Tannenbaum has shared a very close relationship with Johnson, which naturally would be a red flag for someone joining the Jets from the outside.

Several potential GM candidates -- men expected to garner interviews for soon-to-be-open general manager jobs -- said they would never consider taking the Jets job under these circumstances and doubted that any strong candidate would.

"That's totally ridiculous," one exec said. "Only the Jets."

In the end, Johnson might have to bite the bullet and part with Tannenbaum in order to land a someone highly qualified for the position.

another non-playoff year and this team will have to be blown up. Gase needs to work a miracle

The Jets did a pretty good job in free agency during his first couple years and made two consecutive AFC title games. They did draft horribly while he was there and hopefully that is why Grier is the GM and Tannenbaum recognizes he can't evaluate unproven college talent. Hopefully it all works out, but I am very skeptical as well and hated us putting him in this position in the first place.

god we are pathetic.

We have the worst exec in the NFL and his pet gm running the team - it rather upsets me that we arent even going to give Adam Gase a shot at success.

We have probably already ****ed up Tannehills career, we will prob drag Gase down as well

Tannenbaum will have years to "fix this" that asskisser will get plenty of chances

Tannenbaum will waste Gase and Tannehill after he is the most sacked QB in the league once again

Olivier Vernon was replaced by Mario Williams and a 3rd round pick (=)
Derrick Shelby by Alan Branch (-)
Kelvin Sheppard by Kiko Alonso (+)
Brent Grimes by Byron Maxwell (-)
Jason Fox by Jermon Bushrod (+)
Rishard Matthews by no one (-)
Lamar Miller by no one (-)
Dallas Thomas by ?!?!?!?! DALLAS THOMAS?!! :bobdole:

Team refused to upgrade at G and now will have to consider G in the first few rounds instead of CB, LB, RB, etc.

The front office really blew it this year. Assume the Matthews and Miller holes can be filled by Hazel and Ajayi, still need a ton of work on defense and NOW you have a GAPING hole at guard.

Yeah. That. The Jets did "okay" in MT's 1st 2 yrs but then the Titanic hit the iceberg.

I fully expect things to go pear shaped by Oct 2017 at the latest.

let's see if Gase can develop RT. This is where the emphasis on the team should be. he did it in Denver and made Cutler respectable.
I don't mind if Miami has holes to fill, however, this passing attack needs to be vaunted. We have potentially, very good WR's. Yes the line sucks, but we could spend the next ten years trying to fix that. Brady gets rid of the ball under 2-3 seconds. Miami needs something to hang their hat on, and to me the most developed (not saying much) unit is the passing game

Revis, Harris, Mangold. Ferguson, Keller were drafted his first three seasons when Mangini was the coach. Nice core group of talent. Once Rex came on board the FA signings and drafting, with the exception of Wilkerson, went bad.

It's easy to point out the failure in the latter years but to often he doesn't get credit in here for building a team that got to 2 AFC title games.

Just a reminder the last two Miami appearances in the title game were 1993 and 1985.

Miller, atm, is replaced by Ajayi. Still can change with the draft coming up.

If a Guard is the BPA, then it's the right pick to make, even early in the draft.

I'm sorry Ted, but I never bought 09 as a successful year when the reality is they were a 7-7 team, having recently lost 5 out of 6, before Indy pulled its starters while ahead, inserting Curtis Painter and then Cinci pulled its starters. To me it was charity.. not much difference than Rosie Ruiz jumping on the subway to come in first in the Boston Marathon. So he had 1 legit postseason, which is about the same as did Ireland. And don't forget that 2 of their 4 wins in 07 came against the nearly winless Fins.. so that's his mess also.

Maybe you should give him a chance? it's not like he came into a well oiled machine and has ruined it.

He came into a more well oiled machine than the one he left for Itzdick!

There's nothing to develop. Just protect the QB.

Matthews was replaced last year, by Parker.

Matthews did not lose his job to Parker. Parker is our #1 (or the Z in terms of generic personnel). Matthews should be the #2 (or X) and replace Stills.
