But football season has arrived, and the Dolphins’ executive vice president of football operations is anxious how individual stories and that of his team play out once practices begin Thursday morning.
“My experience in the NFL is you get what you’ve earned and just watching our players in the offseason and the coaches and how hard they’ve worked, I’m excited about the season, what we can accomplish,” Tannenbaum told Dolphins.com on Wednesday. “And that’s not by luck, it’s not by happenstance, it’s because of a lot of the hard work that’s already been done. And I’m excited now to see them on the field with pads.”
Like Head Coach Joe Philbin and the rest of the organization, Tannenbaum is excited about the possibilities for the Dolphins in 2015.
“I’m optimistic as well,” he said. “I believe you’ve got to pass to score, you’ve got to run to win. I think you’ve got to be able to pressure the quarterback. I think you need depth at corner. Some of those big things, we’ve accomplished. With that said, we’ve got a long way to go. And really the fun part for me — and I know Dennis (Hickey) and Joe feel the same way — there’s going to be some incredible stories written about guys we haven’t even talked about yet. Is it Terrence Fede? Who is it? Who’s going to step up and take the next step in their career? And that’s the part that I really enjoy, the fulfillment of these guys and their dreams.”
“Going back to a guy like Jimmy Johnson, how he orchestrated the draft or put so much on the area of scouts to get information, I wouldn’t say it was like breaking any news, but it was more like the confirmation of things and how he went about making decisions. Or talking to R.C. Buford about culture and listening to how they came up with the Tim Duncan rule. They actually would not let anybody in the Spurs facility in August because Duncan was always there. He worked so hard that they actually had to close the building down. Again, I’m not saying that Ryan Tannehill is Tim Duncan ... obviously he has a long way to go in terms of the championships that Tim has won, but Ryan has that type of work ethic. When you hear R.C. talk about how they built a team around him, I think there are some interesting parallels. Again, I think we have a long way to go, but it’s reaffirming to know what we’re doing here has been done other places.”

He’s been able to play each week. I think the current trajectory of his career continues to ascend and if we do our job and get him enough players around him and build a team, I think Ryan is a guy we can win with for a long time.”
On Suh: “It’s interesting, when I got a chance to talk to Ndamukong when he was joining the organization, I said, who impacted your career? He talked a lot about Kyle Vanden Bosch, ironically, another University of Nebraska defensive lineman. And I said, look, five years from now, 10 years from now, there’s going to some player, it could be Terrence Fede, who knows who it’s going to be, maybe Jordan Phillips, that is going to say, hey, I’ve learned how to be a pro because of my time with Ndamukong Suh. Look, he’s obviously being paid handsomely and we expect him to play well. But he does have to impact us in a lot of other ways off the field and I think he’ll do that.”
Among other personnel issues, Tannenbaum said he was curious to see the battle at guard and liked some of the things he saw at that position during the spring; he said teams can never have enough cornerbacks; and he likes the mixture of young and veteran talent at wide receiver.
Tannenbaum also pointed out the Dolphins roster at the start of training camp might look different than the one that finishes the season.
From a personal standpoint, Tannenbaum said he was enjoying his full-time transition to South Florida.
“It’s been great,” said Tannenbaum, who served as a consultant for the Dolphins last season. “Obviously, it’s an area of the country that I’m somewhat familiar with. There are no state taxes, for those 2016 free agents that are listening for March of 2016. It’s a great place to raise a family. Obviously the weather is incredible. It’s really been exciting for me and my family. I think again we have a great story to tell. It starts with our owner, Steve Ross, the resources he gets us. When we talk about being world class, we bring in a guy like (Director of Sports Performance) Wayne Diesel, who is from Africa, spent some time in Europe and now we’re bringing cutting-edge technology to give our players the best chance.
