Will Dion Jordan have a spot when he's eligible to return? Tannenbaum said this is a "meritocracy".

Chris Grier says Dolphins would love to have Vernon and Miller back but they'll see what happens when negotiations begin

Tannenbaum doesn't say whether Miko will play a factor in if Grimes returns but says the team looks at the player first

Tannenbaum not saying much on whether he expects Dion Jordan to play next season. If he's reinstated they'll take a close look at him

#Dolphins VP Mike Tannenbaum said the team hasn't made any decision on the cap but restructuring Ndamukong Suh's contract is a possibility.

@JamesWalkerNFL They can create up to $18 million by doing it, but man would that make that backend even harder to deal with

This is how I interpreted that....

Jordan and Grimes are gone, Miller and/or OV will be back if they agree to the "right price" (aka Charles Clay last year), and Suh will be restructuring.

I take it as Vernon and Miller are not high on the priority list. Suh restructuring will depend on what free agents and how many free agents they pursue. If Jordan gets reinstated they will take a look at where he is physically and mentally, if he is up to task he will be given a shot to make the team. They will try and trade Grimes, if nothing happens he may be cut, depending on how FA and draft goes.

Tannebaum no doubt wants to blow yet more massive fa cash (yet doubtless still ignore the o line, linebacker, dt and cb) but I wish we would just take the big hit on Suh and get it over and done with

I'm not saying Miami should be frugal, but the front office needs to take a close look at how the great teams build. They do it through the draft, player development and, usually, by filling needs with low-priced free agents. Those teams also know when to part ways with veteran players.

The player development part has seemingly been a problem for Miami for quite some time.

Teams overspending in free agency year after year are rarely successful. In fact, I can't think of any.

But they did bring back nine coaches from that failed season — including Lou Anarumo and Darren Rizzi, who were Dan Campbell’s top assistants after Joe Philbin’s firing.

Why?

Dolphins football czar Mike Tannenbaum, following the first day of Senior Bowl practice here Tuesday, explained:

“The coaching staff in particular reports to [Dolphins coach] Adam [Gase] and certainly Chris [Grier, Miami’s general manager] and I made some suggestions, but they went all through and were vetted through a pretty rigorous process. They wouldn’t be on our staff if Adam didn’t feel good about them.”

Tannenbaum said retaining nine coaches “was the right decision, not the easy one.”

Added Grier: “They’re good coaches and good people and obviously Adam did his background on them and stuff and feels comfortable with them. It’s good to have a little bit of continuity. They’ll help them in the transition.”

Rizzi returns for an eighth season in Miami, and will again coach the Dolphins’ special teams. Anarumo goes back to coaching the Dolphins’ defensive backs after a short stint as interim defensive coordinator.

“Obviously he had strong consideration to be our head coach and when that decision was made, Adam was in charge of the staff,” Tannenbaum said. “Him and Dan met and those conversations I would leave to Dan and Adam. Then he had other opportunities and we just felt as an organization it was appropriate for him to explore those other opportunities.”

As for the impact Gase has made, Grier said “you can feel the energy” in the building, particularly among players who have stopped by team headquarters.

Added Tannenbaum: “I think to add to that, two other things come to mind. He’s a very authentic person. And to go back to the previous question, nine coaches staying, it would be easy to come in and say, ‘Hey, this team was 6-10, they’re all gone.’ I thought he was very methodical. I thought he was very fair, very critical, and I think we got a great result.”

If you listened to Miami Dolphins executive vice president Mike Tannenbaum speak with the media after a Senior Bowl practice in Mobile, Ala., Tuesday, you'd be tempted to think the team has tons of issues looming and no plans have been set in place for dealing with them.

Remember, Miami's upcoming unrestricted free agents are about to hit the market in March or not.

Decisions on cap casualties have to be made.

Free agency is coming up.

Some contract restructures have to be addressed.

It's almost offseason go time. And the Dolphins?

"We haven't made any decisions as it relates to strategic planning, salary cap, budgets, things like that," Tannenbaum said. "By the time we get to the first day of the league year we should have plenty of room to address the needs we have. And certainly we'll be looking at (Ndamukong) Suh's contract."

No, it doesn't sound like the plan is written yet. But I am told the work is in progress and the Dolphins do not feel threatened by any time constraints. They'll be ready to handle business at a time of their choosing.

But this is also true: The team has not approached looming unrestricted free agents such as Olivier Vernon, Rishard Matthews and Lamar Miller about possibly re-signing with Miami.

"We will over the next few weeks," Tannenbaum said. "We have some time. We still have, in my opinion, plenty of time to hit those guys as we make a decision on who we keep."
Other guys are likely about to get cut -- with Greg Jennings, Quinton Coples, Brent Grimes, Jordan Cameron and others being candidates there -- because their 2016 cap charge is high and their production in 2015 didn't rise to that level.

Before those negotiations begin, before some of the pink slips, are authored, the Dolphins want to come to an organizational opinion on the players. That becomes a more involved process this year because head coach Adam Gase and others on the coaching staff are new, so new thoughts and projections about how to use players going forward have to be considered.

"We have to sit down with coaches to see how each guy fits," general manager Chris Grier said.

"We'll look at all factors to make those decisions," Tannenbaum said.

But could Miami get creative financially with its top overall player and highest-priced player in Ndamukong Suh?

According to Dolphins vice president Mike Tannenbaum, it’s an offseason possibility.

“By the time we get to the first day of the league year, we should have plenty of room to address the needs that we have,” Tannenbaum said confidently Tuesday at the Senior Bowl. “Certainly we will be looking at Suh’s contract.”
Tannenbaum on Kathryn Smith recently becoming the NFL’s first full-time female assistant coach with the Buffalo Bills: “I’m excited for her. I had a chance to work with her with the [New York] Jets. I could always tell how much she loved football. ... She had a very curious mind and I’m really happy for her. It will be great to see how she does.”

Yes but why restructure when it's going to hit us much harder down the road?

The Dolphins, which must address the team's defensive end position because of Olivier Vernon and Derrick Shelby's status as impending free agents, acknowledge they haven't taken a firm stance on Jordan's status.

“We’re going to run a meritocracy," said Mike Tannenbaum, the team's vice president of football operation. "Once he’s reinstated, it is another opportunity for us to improve the team, but ultimately the best players will play.”

Jordan has spent the majority of his two NFL seasons as a situational pass rusher, and a hybrid linebacker for the defense. He contributed just 46 tackles and three sacks over 26 games. He's also been paid more than $14 million in guaranteed money since Miami swapped the 12th and 42nd overall picks to the Raiders to select him third overall in the 2013 draft. The Dolphins could fight to get some of that signing bonus back by filing a grievance.

“Everyone needs to prove something. We talked about building a competitive environment with guys who want to be a Miami Dolphin, guys who want to be here, guys who love the game and want to compete," General manager Chris Grier said when asked about Jordan's future. "What happens, whether he gets re-instated or not, from that point we’ll make our decision once we see him and get him in the building.”

You do not have to restructure ALL of Suh's contract.

I agree. We ain't going nowhere next year anyways. Take the hit while you have a rookie head coach, set the team up for 2017.

You legitimately fix the oline and the head coach is as advertised in terms of scheme/gameplans/play calling and you got a postseason shot in the 2016 season
