Can anyone come up with some examples of QBs that struggled for number of years as starter before finding success and generally being regarded as a very good QB?

it's still difficult for me to determine how much of this is on T-hill and how much on line, receivers, coaches. hiw often does a run of the mill starting QB blossom after several years?

Drew Brees.

Prime example.

Also, Alex Smith to a certain extent.

I know he's not a great QB now, but he's definitely serviceable. That's a far cry from his first 6 years or so where he stunk out loud. He was nearly the same level as Blaine Gabbert was in Jacksonville.

These are the two that come to my mind. Alex Smith was very similar, different coaches/coaching/offensive coordinators all the time. And he couldn't/can't throw deep more so due to a lack of arm power...

You could throw Cam Newton in the mix now I think. P. Manning took awhile to really get surgical. Rich Gannon took a decade. Steve Young from Tampa to SF....I'm sure there are plenty more.

Heck even Big Ben has gotten a lot better in recent years , although was pretty good before hand....a bit like Tom Brady in that regard.

first I need a qb that has struggled for MULTIPLE years...in order for that to be the case with tannehill you are gonna at least need 2016s body of work...and I don't think you are gonna get "struggling" once he gets out of this scheme into a cross your fingers full audible system and we hire a competent oc...again cross your fingers

What others have done has no barring on what another will do...false correlation.

QBs will tend to get better as they get more experience but only really gannon fits this argument though he wasn't a top 10 pick and didn't start the first 5 yrs of his career. someone in Ryan's situation struggling for 5 years then finally gets it w/ the same team? I can't think of any off the top of my head. I guess Brees is close but by his 3rd full season starting he was a pro bowl QB and led his team to the playoffs so I don't think that is a good comparison.

The history of the NFL is littered w/ guys that failed in one spot and succeeded elsewhere, we'll see if Ryan can resurrect his career under his 3rd full time OC next year or if he will have to do so elsewhere.

The "grocery bagger"...Kurt Warner...he didn't really start much at first though...

Funny, b/c that's exactly the type of QB that I think Tannehill could become and always my comparison when discussing his "ceiling".

There are quite a few. Most flashed in the pros or were big time players in college. Tannehill has flashed a little but not enough where being patient is easy. Yet we have no choice.

Terry Bradshaw scuffled quite a bit and got benched for Joe Gilliam.

Jim Plunkett was so bad that Patriots moved on from him.

Those are two guys that went #1 overall.

Rich Gannon bounced around and then it clicked.

There are quite a few that took some time to really play well.

Steve Young & Kurt Warner come to mind

RT can develop and get better, I don't think anyone doubts that

the worry I have is that his potential ceiling is not high enough anyway to win a championship.

There are too many things he does not do well. It is not just a matter of getting reps & experience at this point which is what normally it would be

Look at Jim McMahon. The Bears had the best defense of all time probably, and they had one of the all time best runners in Walter Payton

but when McMahon was out they could not get it done.

He was not a great QB by today's standards, but he did the things that MATTER, the things that help a team WIN GAMES

He made the clutch play when they absolutely had to have it, he converted 3rd downs when a pass was needed.

Those are two things RT just does not do. Even the games we win, he is not able to convert and close out the game on offense more often than not.

He reminds me of Joe Flacco in how he plays. Mobility wise hes a Jake Plummer

The real question should be is there been any qb in history that has gotten hit as much as tannehill to this point in their careers
