Those moments obviously include the 1996 and '97 draft when then-coach and general manager Jimmy Johnson selected Zach Thomas in the fifth round of the '96 draft and one year later selected Jason Taylor in the third round.
Tonight, all three of those men -- Johnson, Taylor and Thomas -- are among the 94 players and coaches who comprise the list of Modern-Era Nominees for the Hall of Fame Class of 2017.

Johnson, who coached the Dallas Cowboys to two Super Bowl titles and later coached the Dolphins from 1996 to 1999, has been a semifinalist and considered for induction by the 46-member selector's committee each of the past two years. This year the selector's committee will number 48 members, including yours truly

Happy for those guys. At least the recognition.

They'll be nominees for a long time. Beyond the obvious guys that deserve to be in, the Hall of Fame has become about creating story lines rather than picking the right guys. To be honest I don't even pay much attention to it anymore.

Zach Thomas is 100% deserving. Compare his resume to that of other Hall of Fame linebackers from the more modern eras of football, such as Karl Mecklenberg. No, he doesn't have the team accomplishments (conference championships) that they do, but his individual accolades were greater.

The first team All-Pro accolades during a career that overlapped with that of Ray Lewis speak for themselves, IMO. He was consistently an elite linebacker and the only reason that you couldn't look at him and say "he was the best middle linebacker in football for more than half a decade" is, well, Ray Lewis.

I believe there is also a strong case to be made for Jason Taylor, who had a few ridiculous seasons and even won DPOY.

Jason deserves to get in on the first ballot. I would never consider Thomas as a HOF. Most overrated Dolphin in franchise history.

zach should get in over Tedy Bruschi but we all know that wont happen, and that is straight garbage. zt is deserving to get in. better statistics than any lb in the hall. the problem is the team, particularly the offense wasnt very good.

Cheers to Zach. :brewskis:
#54 HOF

Im partial to Zach because I have met him on so many occasions. One of the most normal guys you will every come across. Thats not say that he is worthy of Hall of Fame but I'm still pulling for him.

I think Jason has the better chance though to be honset.

Sadly they will be on that list a long time

JT has a GREAT shot at the Hall.
- 6 Pro Bowls ... 4 1st/2nd Team All Pro Selections ... 2006 DPOY ... 2007 Walter Peyton Man of the Year Award ... 2000s All-Decade Team
- 139.5 Sacks (6th All Time ... the 5 guys ahead of him - Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Kevin Greene, Chris Doleman, and Michael Strahan ... and the first two guys behind JT - John Randle and Richard Dent are all in the HOF) ... 9 Defensive TDs scored, which is the most ever by a D-Lineman, and 6 of them were on Fumble Recoveries, another NFL Record.

Taylor is an absolute no-brainer. He was clearly one of the absolute BEST at his position during his era in the NFL ... maybe he wont get in this year, but with JT, its not a matter of "IF" he will get in, its a matter of "WHEN". Im rooting for him to get it this year, but I wont be upset if he doesnt get it. He has many years ahead of him to eventually get in.

ZT is a little bit of a different story.
7 Pro Bowls ... 7 1st/2nd Team All Pro Selections ... 2000s All-Decade Team ... and two NFL LB of the Year awards are certainly worthy of the HOF. Just a shame that the media and everyone loved the flashy, "hey look at me" LBs like Ray Lewis, or media favorite Brian Urlacher (both deserve to get in as well). Zach, I just think it will take a long while for him to get in, but I think he will eventually ... it'll just be a very long time, maybe 10-15 years down the line.

could not disagree with a post more than i disagree with this one!
