If Tripp and McCain are as good as people think we may have that "problem" at LB next year too, especially if we draft one or two high.

That's what we're all hoping for. If McCain and Tripp turn out to be starters, Ellerbe and Wheeler would be cut as soon as they save much of anything towards the cap.

Still won't have that problem cause we'll get rid of Wheeler and Ellerbe which means we'll need two to take their spots...and I'm hoping at some point we'll upgrade the talent enough to where we can finally get rid of Trusnik.

Don't see us carrying 3 QBs. I also think we see some surprise cuts like possibly Sturgis, Dallas Thomas (if he has another terrible game), Philip Wheeler (alright, that may be wishful thinking on my part but I wouldn't keep him over McCain, Tripp, Jenkins or Trusnik given Trusnik's contribution on special teams).

I don't think we have any worries with Tripp and McCain. In fact, I think Wheeler and Ellerbe's contract are simply dead weight we must endure this year. But I don't think that means they will be starting. I foresee Tripp and McCain as starters at some point this year. And when each cracks the starting lineup, they'll never look back. Especially with only Ellerbe and Wheeler competing with them. Those two contracts are merely very expensive mistakes that will be expensive backups for one more year.

I also don't think Dallas Thomas gets cut this year. Like it or not, Philbin believes in teaching. I believe DT is here for his entire rookie contract.

I'm completely on board now with 2 QBs: RT and MM. Moore has once again reminded the haters why he is so valuable to this team. He might be the most valuable backup in the league to his team. (and not based solely on salary)

Sturgis' job is now officially on the line. But we need more than 1 or 2 good games to know for sure. His cut would be in the final group, I would think.

What we really need to be focusing on is trading a DL or WR to get us some RB and LB help. Instead of cutting these promising guys that are log jammed at deep positions and watching someone else plug them into their rotations.

I've said a few times I have no problem keeping 8 WRs temporarily with 2 as tradeable assets. Because any 2 RBs we keep to manufacture the roster spots are not going to be that important to our non-existent running game.

I would almost say our 8th WR is better than our 3rd RB.

I like Damien Williams...kids got a lot of potential...I was pretty excited when we got him via UDFA. At the same time I've been watching the 49ers cause I know they're pretty deep at linebacker and running back. I've been anticipating the debut of Marcus Lattimore but he has yet to play for them.

We won't carry 8 WRs...who do you let go to make room for an extra 2 WRs in hopes of trading them? Terrence Fede? I don't think so. This is the week a lot of teams start calling about fringe players to make trades. Last year there were 12 trades made in August...most notable being A.J. Jenkins from the 49ers to the Chiefs and Jon Baldwin from the Chiefs to the 49ers.

I wouldn't have a problem with that as long as Thigpen is the 8th receiver that can also be used as an emergency RB.

Fede is on my 53. We are VERY deep at DL and WR. On the DL, Fede and Johnson need to be kept. Along with 8 WRs.

Let me be clear, this is just opinion, but when I look at our DL and WRs, I worry will be cutting players that will be on other team's 53. When I look at RBs, I only see 2 or 3 that would be picked up (Moreno, Williams and Miller). And what I am proposing is only a temporary roster maneuver to secure trades before Week 1 or 2 at the latest.

Where am I making room? 2 QBs instead of 3 (+1). 2 RBs instead of 3 (+1).

In my 53, I have:

QB (2) - Tannehill and Moore
RB (2) - Moreno and Williams
TE (4) - Clay, Sims, Lynch, Hoskins
WR (8) - Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Landry, Matthews, Williams, Binns, Hazel
OL (9) - Albert, James, Colledge, Smith, Thomas, Turner, Garner, Brenner, Fox/Larsen
DL (9) - Wake, Vernon, Starks, Mitchell, Odrick, Shelby, Francis, Fede, Johnson
LB (7) - Misi, McCain, Tripp, Ellerbe, Wheeler, Trusnik, Jenkins/Freeny
CB (6) - Grimes, Finnegan, Taylor, Davis, Aikens, Brown
S (3) - Delmas, Wilson, Thomas
SP (3) - Potter, Denney, Fields

Exemptions: Jones (S), Pouncey (C), Jordan (DL)

The exemptions buys us time to weed out additional trade offers and competition to make sure we get the best 53 on the field.

This would be the initial 53. Exemptions and trading WRs and DL would transform this roster a lot by Week 5.

Keep in mind, I'm trying to keep the best 53 guys. And I think Carolina will be knocking on our door for at least 1 WR.

I would never put just two RBs on a roster, especially one that carries no FB on it. Moreno (who's still recovering from his knee being scoped) and a rookie in Williams would be inviting disaster. Especially if Williams is returning kicks.

Carolina doesn't care about WRs lol...how long did they go with Just Steve Smith as their only WR? They're perfectly happy (or dumb) to go with Kelvin Benjamin, Jericho Cotchrey and Greg Olsen...and truthfully it's better than their WR corp last year when they made the playoffs.

Only Tennessee and the Jets stick out to me as needing WR help and we're not trading in conference and especially not in division. Regular season trades almost never happen in the NFL. It's a waste of roster spots to carry two extra WRs.

I like your thinking. I also like the idea of keeping just two RB until we can find a better 3rd. I would stash a RB or 2 on the practice squad until then. That way they will be up to par if we need 1 due to injury. If we lose 2 RB's in 1 game, we could use a TE as an HB. Not saying this is an ideal situation, but I would rather take a chance then give up a guy to be poached.

Yes, it is unreasonable to keep 8 WRs, even 7. But at this point, what we have for depth at RB is hot garbage. And I would rather, at least temporarily, like to think this is not the final picture we will see at RB. I can see 3 RBs on the final 53, but not if it means keeping Thomas another year or keeping yet another pass blocking RB when we already have too many. I'm cool with Miller, Moreno and Williams. But I firmly believe in 2 things about our RBs: Thomas needs to be cut and Williams needs to be on the 53.

I'm get ill when I think about our RBs. We need better options.

- Miller is not getting cut. Crazy to consider the RBs and not look at him as our likely starter. Also doubt that Gillislee gets cut with Daniel Thomas, who i expect to go.
- Hazel is likely Practice Squad. We just have too many others available. Also doubt that Binns makes it.
- Sturgis will make it if healthy. If he's not, then we have a problem. Sturgis has ice in his veins. I'm not prepared to cut him off because of a strained groin - at worst put him on the PUP.
- I wouldn't write Egnew off yet. If he was on the bubble, why wouldn't you want to see what he an do as a pass catching target in the preseason? If that's the case, maybe Gator Hoskins goes to the Practice Squad
