At the half way point, the Dolphins are averaging 26.1 points per game, up from 19.8 a year ago, a very welcome sight for all Phans. Going hand in hand, RT's QBR is 90.9, up from 81.7 a year ago. Thing is that only ranks him at #16, as there are 18 QB's who also have a QBR of 90 or above so far this year. Last year there were only 8.

How much have the rule changes affected this, with scoring being up throughout the NFL? And is this a good or bad thing for the league?

I would say the main reason for the increased scoring is the turnovers and great field position. The Offense has to be given credit for cashing in these opportunities and Ryan's play in the red zone has certainly helped accomplish this. Last year we were -1.5 point per game in Net Turnover Points, while this year we are +7 points per game.

Probably has a little to do with rules changes also. Scoring is good for league but when you give up 50 yards on one penalty that is an issue. With increased scrutiny on defensive backs I see them changing the pass interference down the road to a shorter penalty (15 yards)

Good point for us but, what about the rest of the teams, and having 18 QB's with a 90+ QBR vs only 8 last year?

I think it will even itself out and get closer to last year.
I don't think it has much to do with rule changes. I haven't noticed many more penalties on defense this year (im sure there is a stat out there, and I may be wrong)
Also, a long PI call doesn't help a qb rating, does it? Obv it helps if it leads to a td pass. But, I don't think penalties help qbr much anyway..

Scoring in the league this year is crazy. I cannot remember a year with so many 40 and 50 point games. The rules have totally changed how much scoring there is.

QBR may be up but scoring is about the same average as last year.

In 512 regular season games last year 11,985 points were scored or about 23.4082 per game on offense .

This year in 268 games 6,272 points were scored or about 23.4029 per game on offense.

Scoring is actually down by .0053 points per game from last year. Not sure why the QBR has shot up.

I think the strategy to increase Tannehill's number of read-option runs has been instrumental in the success of the offense over the last few weeks. I would imagine that his ESPN QBR rank > traditional QB rating rank as a result during this span.

Fewer bad quarterbacks starting, and the top quarterbacks are playing better than ever.

i think the massive spike in qbr is due to geno smith being benched the last two weeks.

Here is an amazing stats that relates to our increased scoring this year.

Currently we lead the entire league in red zone possessions with 4.9 per game (39 red zone possessions in 8 games)
Last year we averaged 2.9 per game. (46 red zone possessions in 16 games)
We could surpass our red zone possessions from last year in the next few games.

The next best team is averaging 4.4 per game.

Just imagine if we could capitalize on at least half or more of the ones that we've missed. We probably would have won against SD by 50 points.

Yes, our red zone conversion is pitiful this year. But we have so many attempts that it doesn't matter. 19 TD's on 39 red zone trips.

I don't really get it either because honestly we never really had red zone issues with Tannehill before. He has actually been considered pretty good in the red zone. It was getting there that was difficult in previous years.
