“BUNCH OF TEAMS” COULD BE SITTING IT OUT ON FRIDAY
Posted by Mike Florio on February 26, 2009, 8:10 p.m. EST
With free agency opening in roughly four hours, a league source tells us that a “bunch of teams” could be sitting out the spending spree that typically unfolds on the first few days of the player buying period.

And that has several agents feeling more than a little nervous.

We’ve been hearing it for several weeks now. The guys at the top will get paid. After that, things could soften considerably.

And while the salary floor will require every team to spend well over $100 million on player salaries in 2009, the fact is that they’re not required to commit all or any portion of it in March.

With a draft pool regarded by many as deeper than usual, some teams could decide to attempt to fill their needs with rookies, and then to pursue free agents selectively thereafter.

So while we’re hoping for a fast and furious free-agency free-for-all, the reality could be that, apart from the Haynesworths and the Houshmandzadehs of the world, it might not be all that hectic in 2009.

As agressive as we have been I cannot think we are on, but you never know. I personally feel after we sign Brown or if we sign Brown things can cool down. Carey,Crowder,Bell and Wilson were very nice signings.

This is probably more of a reality than many of us want to admit. Despite the swift moves we made last year, none were really that BIG of names. This year we've re-signed some important guys and brought in two new guys that should help us out. Yes, we still have many holes to fill or upgrade. But I really don't see the FO panicing and overpaying for F/A's that are going to get rediculous $$$. Very rarely do these events pay off for teams. Washington is notorius for this and now they are doing it again. See how well it paid off for the Jets last year. They signed a glut of big name/priced F/A's and everyone had them in the SB near the start of the season. But they missed the playoffs and all the other big F/A shoppers last year did nothing. We'll upgrade in some spots with good, but reasonably priced guys who either get cut or are behind someone else. Then we'll draft a bunch of guys and develop them into starters. Remember, this was supposed to be a 3+ year plan to turn things around. Last year was very unexpected for the F/O, so we still have two more years of upgrades and drafts to get us where they really want us to be.
