Didnt see a thread for this, sorry if I missed one

@GregLikens: #Dolphins announce they've completed interviews with Mike Shanahan & #Lions DC Teryl Austin for their head coaching position

@SiClancy: Lot of people have asked why Austin & Miami. Body of work is historically strong. Has developed raw players - Ansah, Slay - into good ones.

@SiClancy: As @RobertKlemko said: "he did good interviews with 9ers, Bills, Bears & Falcons; engenders loyalty. Smart, principled, thoughtful/thorough"

Did a good job with the Lions, develops players.... if you want a D minded coach sounds like a good option

Personally I would prefer a bright offensive mind, but our D certainly needs a lot of help

If we go D Im all about McDermott. Austin seems like a bright mind but Im about a guy with more experience than Austin.

Rooney rule requirement met. Nothing more

Austin is a Michigan Man.

So that makes me skeptical that we will hire him simply because of that. That might not be fair to Austin, who seems to be genuinely well regarded (people in Detroit really like him), but it is what it is.

Oh, no. He's a Michigan Man who comes recommended by Jim Harbaugh. Steve Ross is absolutely not looking at him because of the Rooney Rule. He is a very, very serious candidate.

Considering we are interviewing 3 black coaches including a rb coach from a bad team, saying this about a guy running one of the best d's in the NFL seems a bit cheap

To think that the interview was done to meet a rooney rule is lame. It's situations like this that make me wish a "rooney rule" candidate gets hired. Teryl is qualified and a damn good candidate. He's not my first choice but how dare you imply that there's nothing more to it.

I dont think of Austin as so much a rooney rule look , although Im sure some teams are doing this. The Buffalo coach to me is not deserving of an interview but neither was Lane Kiffin or JAck del rio when they were first hired. I do think we hired Grier so we could could get our guy without having to go through any type of process

Comments like those Piss me off and totally discredits a person's qualifications. I don't know who to blame, the rule or the ignorance from people assuming its because of it.

I would welcome Austin as long as he has a good plan for the OC position. And judging by Tannebaum's criteria of "we'll choose the best staff, not just the best coach", that will be the real challenge for these first time head coaches. How good of a staff can they build.

These Rooney rule comments are getting old and show a very narrow minded opinion. Austin is a damn good coach and will be given serious consideration. Though I prefer previous head coaching experience, Austin, Gase and McDermott should be given serious consideration.

The rule leaves a very bad taste in my mouth but there is ignorance on both sides

Agreed. I think the rule is stupid. But it's there because of the past and how things were perceived. Sadly some still think this primitive way that somehow if you are a minority your not a serious candidate or you belong in a coordinator role.

Another reason I like a seasoned and experienced guy is they undoubtedly have better connections to build a stronger staff. Philbin put together one of the worst staffs and set this franchise back many years.

Man my first choice is hue Jackson not because of a rooney rule. It's my opinion that this league already offensive and we need all the help we can get. And he has HC experience. But...before him I'd take Payton in a heart beat...

Apparantly Gase can bring a great staff with him
