The Seattle Seahawks are facing the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl, but they have an off-the-field battle brewing with Texas A&M.

School officials are upset with the Seahawks' use of the "12th Man" theme to recognize their fan support. A&M has legal claims to the "12th Man" moniker, a school tradition that dates to the 1920s.

The Seahawks have celebrated their fans as a "12th Man" since the 1980s, when they used to turn the now-demolished Kingdome into one of the NFL's loudest venues.

And yet they are not mad at every NFL announcer and other teams for using the term.

the seahawks aren't the only team to refer to fans as the 12th man...

the 12th man is used by every announcer, fan and football follower as another term for homefield advantage or crowd noise. What's next? Some owner claims the trademark to the word stadium?

TEXAS A&M:monkeyl:

Texas A&M needs to worry about not going 5-6 again and not "The 12th man"

I think it's lame they can even have the authority to copyright what is essentially a "cliche". Even though they purport to have "invented" it, they only put a copyright in in the 90s, by then everybody was using it in every day conversation.

It's like a musician copyrighting a I-IV-V chord progression.

Thats like me copyrighting my name.

You joke, but remember when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, basketball player, threatened to sue Karim Abdul-Jabbar, football player, for having the name Abdul Jabbar on the back of his jersey? nevermind the fact that Kareem Abdul Jabbar was not Lew Alcindor's original name, and that it's a standard Islam name. In fact neither of the two were born with that name since it is just an Islam name they were given.

Stupidest...lawsuit...ever. And he WON :/ and Karim wound up changing his name (though that portion is not reflected in the below article)

This is America at it's worst. Unless you produce an actual product & that is the brand name of the merchandise, no one should be able to get a copyright on a common use of a word or phrase.

EXACTLY!

Some people are'nt happy unless they have sound something to be unhappy about...what a bunch of *******.

If they were so damn offended by this why did'nt they bring it up 20 years ago when the Seabags retired the #12?

When I went to Texas Tech we use to say that Texas sucks and Texas A&M swallows. :D
