Or, how Tannehill stacks up against his peers.
During the offseason I did a chart in Google Sheets that listed the stats of all starting QBs drafted since 2011 (when Cam Newton was drafted) and then assigned points in each category based upon rank. From now on, each Tuesday or Wednesday I'll update this thread with each week's stats so Dolfans have a touchstone to track Tannehill's progress.
Now, I need to explain how I came to these point values and how I interpret them. There are 14 players and each player is ranked in individual categories, with the best in each category receiving 14 points and the worst receiving 1 point (usually). In the event of a tie in a given category, the tied players will receive the same number of points and the first player not involved in the tie will receive the point for their place. For example, in a two-way tie for first both players will receive 14 points while the 3rd player will receive 12. If this doesn't make sense to you, I'm not sure how to explain it better. Now, onto how I interpret the total point values.
140 Points (100%): The perfect QB, it would be reasonable to suspect he is God's Chosen One, because you'd be hard pressed to put up the required numbers in Madden on easy difficulty against the worst team in the game.
126 Points (90%): This QB's jersey is going to find itself in a display in Canton. Nobody is going to put up good enough career numbers to pass the 90% threshold.
112 Points (80%): All-time great game or season; it's either an aberration or this player is going to the Hall on the first ballot.
105 Points (75%): Elite game or season, consistent performances like this are what get players into the Hall.
98 Points (70%): An outstanding game or season, this QB has what it takes to put a team on his shoulders regardless of difficulty.
91 Points (65%): All else being average, this QB will see you to the playoffs.
84 Points (60%): This QB will win a lot, if the supporting cast is very good or better.
77 Points (55%): This QB needs an elite supporting cast, otherwise you'll lose as many games as you win. If you're lucky.
70 Points (50%): Likely a rookie QB on a bad team, his supporting cast needs to be improved to see if he has "it". If that isn't the case, your team is in trouble.
<70 Points: This QB needs to be replaced with the quickness, unless his backup is somehow worse. In which case you should resign yourself to a terrible season and a 1st round draft pick spent on a rookie QB.
