What people don't understand is that, like the OP suggests, the words, the energy, the vibes, whatever you want to call it, that you send to your team has an effect on the team. Ask the vet who posted. How do you think it would affect his performance if he knew people back home talked about nothing else than what a stinky soldier he was and how he wasn't worth a peanut. Think how you would feel if people you cared about spoke like that about you (and, yes, believe it or not, football players are human).

Hopefully the general would take him out of the battle before he gets himself and the platoon killed. Do you really think you're doing anybody any favors by letting and encouraging a bad soldier to go out there.
"You can do this Timmy! You're the best soldier ever".
Even though you know in your heart he'll probably get killed.
