The Best Trade Never Made

who knows maybe he will be our vet next year as a free agent . Orton is solid to me but Denver is a mess and so injury plagued.

I do not have an issue with that. I could see us getting a young QB in the draft that needs to sit and say...a Jon Gruden would love a guy like Orton.

God damn it Orton is ****ing terrible. He is absolutely terrible in the 4th quarter. Almost as bad as Tony Romo if you can believe it. Please do not bring him in. If anything bring back Chad Pennington as a QB coach. Pennington is a top 5 QB in the league when it comes to reading defenses.

I wanted Orton also ONLY because he is a much better QB than Henne. The reason he is not wearing a Dolphin uniform is because he over priced himself.

Many folks who follow football said that all summer. Many said Orton can be signed for nothing as a Free Agent within a couple years.

The bigger/funnier factoid ... the high light of the 2011 Dolphin Free Agent season ... was Not making that move!! Ugh!!

(They signed Bush to sell tickets, many commented on Reggie's talent this summer too. Bush can't even sell tickets, let alone make plays.)

Since we are on the topic of "best things never done." How about not drafting Brady Quinn when the whole world expected us to. It seems hilarious in retrospect that there were a whole bunch of people clamoring for him to come here to Miami. Ginn wasn't the end all be all, but he did help us beat the Jets on a couple of occasions.

Who wanted Orton? Ireland, Daboll, or Sparaono?
I think it was the media and fans who were driving this one.

Tons of rumors floating around but I've never seen anything concrete suggesting that they were ever going to give up much, if anything to get Orton.

yeah they actually had a trade in place for a 4th rounder, but orton wanted a 3 year contract extension for about $10 million a year (cant remember the # exactly -think it was $28 million). ross didnt agree to the extension, and orton decided to stay in denver and finish out the year before he becomes a free agent in the offseason.

now it looks like he probably made a poor decision, and should have come to miami and played out the year instead, cause hes going to be riding the pine the rest of the year.

Only on sites like FH was there a clamor for a mediocre QB who lost 10 out of his last 13 games, had a career 3rd down and 2010 4th qtr sub-62QBR, was referred to in Denver as "3 and out Orton," had 90% of 2 popular Broncos fans polls wanting him gone (as well as one of the greatest QBs of all time who'd even experimented with Brady ****ing Quinn)...and was accorded absolutely no interest by QB hungry teams while the likes of McNabb and Tavaras Jackson were snapped up! :idk:

I understand this could well have been an overreaction to dissatisfaction with Henne but whether it says more about Henne or the feeding frenzy of Fins fans unable to see the forest from the trees, it's nevertheless troubling..

Kudos to Ross for stepping in to stop the madness.

but ROSS SUCKS!!!! hes a dummy!!!! he doesnt know how to close deals!!! all these celebrities suck!!! WE NEED A NEW OWNER!!!!

Honestly the best things he'd done so far, is what he hasn't done. Holding off on signing Soliai to an extension looks like a great move so far, and not going after Orton seems even better.

For his first 2 years as Dolphin owner, Stephen Ross came up with the big $ for selective free agents like Gibril Wilson, Jake Grove, Brandon Marshall and Karlos Dansby. Of these only Dansby was a clear success in season one, while Wilson and Grove were both axed after a year.
There is a common business practice where significant capital is only provided if senior management (Ireland and Sparano) have a track record of delivering on the previous investments. And rather than spending good money after bad, management need to improve their batting average on the expensive free agent acquisitions. This year's expensive pick up was Reggie Bush but his cost was offset by the cost savings realized in letting Ronnie and Ricky depart.
I think that it's likely that Ross has said that faucet to the pipeline of cash is tightened until they start generating more productivity from the expensive acquisitions. Hence the no to 3 years $27M for Orton. And when you see the success that the Bills are having on a shoestring compared to Miami's expenditure, you can't blame Ross for demanding more accountability. While some on this site expect the owner to spend the maximum, irrespective of the success, I think that this is the first real sign in his personal development as an owner. Btw, his interest in Jim Harbaugh as a possible coach was knocked but his immediate success in San Francisco with effectively the same personnel (including a multi year failed QB) is interesting to observe.

ya count me as one of those who thought orton would b an upgrade over henne.i guess even a blind cat catches a mouse every once and awhile
