Are we going to continue to use this wildcat formation and run these option-esque plays or do you think it was more of a one game deal and we more than likely wont be seeing this anymore?

I know people say "the option cant work in the NFL" but I think after what we saw today it CAN be a great asset. Now, of course you had to add in the fact that New England didn't know that we were going to do that but im curious to see if we plan on using that more this season or if this was a one time thing.

Personally, I think its a great way of utilizing our two solid backs and I think that we could continue to run it effectively this season. My honest opinion however, is that we aren't going to see this again and if we do it will be maybe a handful of times.

For those of you who got to see the game, how many times did we run this formation?

I don't think we're going to continue to see this formation unless Ronnie drops straight back and delivers a bomb at some point. Which I'm not gonna rule out.

But it won't continue to work when defenses get some film on it, that's for sure.

I dont think it was a true "option". I do like the possibilities though. I think we could use it a couple of times every few games. Two much and defenses will start to catch up to the formation's weeknesses.

Thats basically my feelings on it

I just hope they continue to try it to see if it can still be successful before they decide that they aren't gonna mess with it anymore

Well no its not a true college type option, but it is an option play

Ronnie can keep it, give it to Ricky, or throw it

it'll be something to have in the arsenal, and even if we never use it, it'll be another play that the defense will have to worry about, meaning potential time taken away from looking at other plays. which means we can surprise them with something ELSE, as i'm sure there's all kinds of plays up our sleeves.

plus, we ran it 6 times today, and it worked 5 times. the one time it didn't work was when Ricky slipped and fell with a wide-open field in front of him. so there's no reason to go away from it now. maybe have Ronnie throw a quick pass to Pennington...

The option doesnt work in the nfl. At least not if you try to use it every down. But if you come out of the huddle and line up, it sends the defense scramling. I see no reason why we couldn't use it 5 or 6 times a game.

i'm assuming the handoffs and passes are designed from the formation, so it's not an option at all. an option would be where Ronnie sees the defense after the snap and decides what he's going to do with the ball. doesn't look like that's what happen

If it's used on occasion it might be effective. I think most of its effectiveness today was due to the element of surprise. The Pats had no film on it and had no gameplan for it. Future teams will.

Just having it in the arsenal is something that teams will have to prepare for. Even if it is only used occasionally I like the fact that the offense did not just line up with 2 WR's and try and stuff it down the Pats throats. I am excited at the creativity of this new formation as well as QUAD SETS!!! Nice game plan by Sparano and Co.

It is an interesting question. I remember when Urban Meyer was hired at Florida. A lot of people said the spread offense would not work in the SEC because of the speed on defense. It seems to have worked. You see a ton of college teams using it now.

I realize that NFL defenses are much faster. If used in the right situation with the right personnel, it might work in the NFL. I could see the Dolphins adding a few more wrinkles with Ted Ginn to keep teams guessing.

I'm sure other teams who saw our success against the vaunted Patriots will try it too. Who knows? Maybe the Dolphins just created the newest fad in offensive schemes. The West Coast Offense is getting old anyway.

This is my question, if the defense in the NFL is faster does that imply the offense gets slower from college to the NFL?

Wouldn't the offense be bigger and faster as well?

Either way, ide like to see us keep using this at times just because its a way to use both of our backs at the same time.

if we use it a couple times a game it may work. other then that, no.

its not just that in the NFL everyone is faster, its that in the NFL everyone is so much more disciplined. their not going to break out of their lanes. and knowing that we are running the ball, have 8,9 guys at the line of scrimmage filling their lanes and staying at home, its something that cant be effective to much.

Well you are assuming that if they put 8,9 guys in the box we wouldn't be looking to throw the ball instead. Hence the beauty of the option.

Im not even trying to say it would work or we should find out, but if we ran that formation and play type 6 times and 5 times resulted in big plays I sure hope they plan on busting it out more often.

Even if teams gameplan for it and are ready for it, its still going to be difficult to stop I think.

Yes, the pats seemed very caught off guard by this "wild-cat formation" or option formation with #23 takin the snaps. I really couldnt believe the times when they used this play option. I mean, the pat defenders were just standing around like "whatda we do george whatda we do". Most hilarious thing i've seen by far, and on top of that for a while there i thought maybe someone paid bill bellifail a truck load of manure to rig the game and what not.
