As we all know, the Saints are a high powered offense, with a strong defense. So how does the Miami Dolphins beat a team that will probably be able to score at will?
The answer is simple, compile long drives on offense and be physical.
The truth to the matter is, while the New Orleans Saints are a great football team, they are not a physical football team. These guys are mostly finesse type players that win there battles with technique and talent.
The Saints have an overall run defense metric rating of -2.9. To put that into perspective, the New York Jets had a 22.6 run defense metric rating going into the football game. The Miami Dolphins have a 39.3 run defense metric rating.
So whats all these funny metrics mean?
It means that a team like Miami, can run on the Saints defense. The Saints defense might not have given up that many rushing yards yet, but not many teams have stayed in close games with them either.
Miami needs to come out and punch these guys in the mouth from a physical standpoint, and never let up. This is a game that will be in the Miami humidity and not in the comfort of a dome. The Saints defense will wear down, if we can keep the game close and keep pounding them with long physical drives.
If Miami controls the TOP by at least 10 minutes and can rush for at least 150 yards with another good performance from Henne, the offense will have done their part in winning this football game.
Now onto the tough task, stopping the power of the Saints offense.
First off, I think we need to man-up Sean Smith on Marques Colston and take him out of the game. Smith is faster, has the height and has better COD than Colston. I think he will be very effective in this aspect.
The only way we slow Brees and company down is to get pressure on Brees, meaning consistent pressure.
We have 3 very good pass rushers in Cam Wake, Joey Porter and Jason Taylor. We need to use that to our advantage!!!
Stop playing old school defense with a line them straight up and go mentality. Use our strengths to our advantages. Move Porter and Taylor around, blitz them at all angles!!!
Than keep rotating Wake from side to side, we need to draw confusion to get them off of their rhythm.
In running downs, because they are also very good at that too, bring in our 4 d-line set. Randy Starks, Paul Soliai, Jason Ferguson and Kendal Langford will make it hard for the Saints to rush the ball effectively. Do not drop a Safety in the box, once we do that we are playing to their strengths and our weaknesses.
Of course, the biggest thing we need to do is come to play. The best game-plan will fail if the other team wants it more. No matter how good of a coach you are, there are 11 match-ups on the field that need to be won by the players.
These will be the three keys to this game:
1. Come out physical and stay physical
2. Keep them guessing with the pass rush
3. Win in the trenches
If we can come out of the game (in 2 weeks ) with saying yes to these three things, Miami will come out with a victory.
GO FINS!!!
