Warner to Bruce in the NFC championship led the Rams over the Bucs. E. Manning with the 50yarder to Tyree in the superbowl. Montana to Rice back in the day. Marino to Duper and Clayton all the time. The bomb is a dangerous weapon and it is the fastest way to score points, gobble yardage, and can change the complexion of a game. The hailmary even in the last seconds of a game is a last ditch attempt but is still a chance to shock the world. In my years watching the game most great successful Qb's I watched threw the long ball or at least could throw it if they had to. My question is if we get a WR wide open down field can Pennington serve up a 50 or 60 yd strike ? I have read that most of his passes were 15 to 20 yds and any big yardage came from the run after the catch. The farthest I have seen him throw this year was around twenty yards. I am curious to know how far his current maximum distance is? Does anyone else feel that having no deep ball threat can be rather limiting to our team and cause us to not be able to capitalize on golden opportunities? Most of our divison rivals have this option in their arsenal can we afford not to? Thoughts?Info?

Thank you for bringing this up. I feel the deep ball is the most effective weapon in all of football, more effective than a stellar defense, and even an 1,800 running back. If you have that moss like ability as a receiver or even a semi-moss like ability with a qb that can get you the ball, you are absolutely lethal. You do change the complexion of the game and completely change the defensive scheme used against your offense. This opens up opportunity for the running game and even more so for your other receivers ala wes welker. If the deep ball can be integrated into our offense or atleast take more shots downfield, the check downs and dump offs can become extremely effective. I believe we have a chance to do this with henne, possibly pennington if he proves to be in full health, and with ronnie and ricky who knows!?!?

Here's the painful truth ...

From a Jet Fan ...

Chad Pennington is the nicest guy in the world ... but he can't throw the football like a typical NFL QB... and the problem is EVERY defensive coordinator in the NFL knows this...they have no fear of the deep ball, so they stack the box, and all the DB's creep up a little closer to the line of scrimmage. This has 2 results... ONE --- good backs like Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown become very average, or less than average because the defense doesn't need to respect the pass... TWO --- DB's don't need to worry about deep passes being completed over them so they play up, and sooner or later they jump the route and take one of Pennington's lame ducks the other way. This puts a straightjacket on the offense... SEVERELY limiting what you can do... and believe me --- it leaves ABSOLUTELY no margin for error. Sparano will realize this, but by that time you will be well on your way to another miserable season, and Chad Henne will get his chance. Trust me ... watching the speedy Ted Ginn Jr. have to slow up, or come back for those short throws is going to get old very quick. See you on Opening Day !

I mean in our division there is gonna be Favre throwing to Coles & Cotchery ; Brady throwing to Moss & Welker and then there is us limping into the ring with Pennington (No arm) throwing to Ginn(A converted KR/PR) & Hagan(a guy who accuired the name "No hands"). If we played in the NFC north we might be okay but in the AFC east it just worries me. I hope we are awesome this year but it just seems that we limit ourselves before we even get to the fight.

Your a tool

I understand how the 'threat' can be used... as well as the quick strike, keeping defenses honest argument but there are other things that need to be considered.

First off it is an EXTREMELY low percentage play due to the sheer number of factors needed in your favour... Beginning with OL protection, Qb arm strength and accuracy, WR speed and more importantly seperation... and lastly some kind of a scheme or reliable fake to keep the CB isolated without help from the safety... (lets face it there is a reason Randy Moss is Randy Moss... There are few receivers who have his ability to go and get it...) Bottom line??? It takes ALOT MORE than a strong arm and speed to make this an effective part of any arsenal.

Next is actually one of its benefits, the 'quick strike' philosophy... it is a single shot downtown... One play... it means that you end up giving the ball back to the other team immediately... You can actually help them control the ball and the clock as well as tire your own defense! A grinding running game, while not as sexy, allows you to control the clock and tire the opponent...

The real truth is... In today's NFL you need a balanced attack... One dimensional teams will not survive with the caliber of defensive minds and players in the game today.

While I agree with you that it takes more then the threat of 'the bomb', as defenses will challenge you to do it against them, to be effective... it cannot be your bread and butter... A balanced attack is the only true way to keep defenses 'off balance'...

i know chad pennington has the weakest arm in the game but this guy mentioned montana 2 rice and i couldnt believe it because they say montana had one of the weakest arms in the world.i heard that if montana was playing today he would be battling pennington for the biggest chicken arm in it. so dont give montana praise for his deep ball and than diss pennington cause they have the same arm strengh

I have a difficult time with this argument especially since Chad demonstrated how effective a QB he can be AGAINST US... Look no further than how the man has dominated our own Dolphins to see how the 'dink and dunk' can absolutely dismantle a defense... I will take accuracy over arm strength any day... The underneath stuff can KILL YOU as it allows the receiver to 'block out' the coverage... Then there is the always lethal Yards after the Catch... and if you have RB's and FB's with hands (which we do) you have MULTIPLE options and cease to become predictable...

Did no one else see this guy against us????

So much lamenting against a QB who has hands down 'OWNED' YOUR TEAM... Indisputable proof that the 'so called' lack of ability to throw the deep ball has not IN ANY WAY prevented him from being an effective QB in the NFL.

I am not saying that smashmouth football and short passes are bad, the point I was trying to make is that most the Qb's in our division can make all the throws so that in the rare opportunity a deep ball becomes available due to running the ball and playaction passes they can take advantage of it. And as far as the Pennington owning us argument goes who hasn't owned us the last couple seasons? Its not like we were dominating the league the last few seasons.

we will get those long gains, but it will be after the catch. remember, kick returners specialize in moving down the feild and dodging other players, thats why we have ginn, and hagan is a big WR, he is bigger then alot of the DBs in the league, so he can go after the high ball, and come down with it

Guys I would rather have the #1 defense than the #1 offense any day of the week. I watched Marino set one record after another and what did we get? It was very fun to watch but we couldn't finish some close games because we couldn't run and we couldn't stop anybody from scoring. We had an awesome offense that could score from anywhere on the field and we still didn't win it all, you need a balanced offense and a great defense to win championships. So I don't care how far Pennington can throw it as long as he throws it to the open reciever.
