No Need For A Run Game When Middle Of Field Is Wide Open
Maybe this is true every week, but I feel like the game was decided days before the opening kickoff, when the Ravens’ coaches were game-planning how to attack Miami’s defense. Someone certainly saw something on film that told them the middle of the Dolphins defense was vulnerable. Boy, was it ever. Throwing mostly over the middle, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco enjoyed an epic day, one of his best ever. “We felt like we could get behind their [line]backers a bit. When they went zone, there were holes there,” he said. He found so many holes that the Ravens didn’t even bother to try to get their running game going. I’m normally a proponent of a balanced run-pass ratio, but on a day when the Ravens picked up chunks of yards almost every time Flacco dropped back, the running game was irrelevant. Don’t be fooled: They’re still going to need the run this season, especially on the road. But you take what’s available every week, and the Ravens clearly saw that yards and points were available in the middle of the field against Miami. They took full advantage of the opportunity.

Still ran for over 100 yards.

We also got no pressure but that goes hand-in-hand with the lack of coverage. Flacco didn't even have to come off his primary read...it was a skeleton drill out there.

Flacco didn't do anything amazing. It was pitch and catch and the guy would run for another 8 yards before contact. I believe just about any QB would have done the same thing. 95% of his passes went to a WIDE OPEN receiver and I mean there were times when there was no defender within 10 yards of where the pass was going. It was that bad of a performance(or lack of)by our defense. But hey, lets use multiple picks on a 4th string WR instead of drafting a LB

Ozzy rules!!

Its hard to get pressure against a quick passing game.

I said this going back to the Pats game; you have to blitz up the middle so that the QB at least has his vision blocked to the middle of the field. The wide 9 lends itself to a rush outside allowing the QB to step up and see the whole center of the defense. And with these LBs what he's seeing is wide open short routes. The one pick we got was a middle rush that forced the QB wide.

what really burns me is that we have to throw to a receiver covered like a blanket and the result is usually an immediate tackle unless it's broken. When teams play us they catch and run and are usually brought down from behind after a foot pursuit. Our receivers need to be coached up on route running, and getting separation cause we lack in this area.

Everyone acts like the Ravens discovered something in our D. The Rams did the exact same thing, they just failed to execute it as well.

This has been the case all year. We have just had better matchup for the most part so it didn't look so bad. Injuries at the worst times and places caused all of our linebackers to be backups at one point (butler is not a real starter for us).

What's was different though is the offense stagnated in the worst way. Run game was there at times but the deficit got to be too much to continue running.

It's been a given that this defense doesn't play well catching up. We need to be ahead to play at our best, because we are weak everywhere but d - line (and even then...) which lends itself to problems. When our pass rush doesn't touch their qb we have problems with this defense.
