OK, this is by far the worst of the ESPN "original programing". The Bear Bryant one was just bad. The Bob Knight one was pure garbage, but this one makes those pieces of film look like Godfather 1 and Godfather 2. I understand "artistic leeway" takes place when filming on a subject of real events that really took place. But at some point it goes waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too far. And creates an environment where ESPN loses credibility when doing these things.
I find it hard to believe George Steinbrenner, a multi-millionaire in 1977 had a chair and a couch shaped like a baseball glove in his office.
I find it hard to believe he had the "lead, follow, or get out of the way" sign on his office desk.
I find it very hard to believe that seconds after the 1976 World Series where the Yanks lost to one of the greatest teams in the history of the sports, the Big Red Machine, that George went into the clubhouse stomping mad and told Billy Martin that this was his team now. Nobody gave NY a shot in that series. Heading into Game 4 down 3-0 it should have been no surprise they had lost the series. And George was so upset that they lost he had to go get in Martin's face seconds after the series ended. VERY UNLIKELY!! In fact I would bet my life on him not doing that.
They play Yogi Berra up to be the bumbling fool act. Which yeah that is the public perception of him NOW. But in 1977, some 30 years ago, as a coach on the team, I highly doubt he acted that way.
They want to portray Steinbrenner as OVER THE TOP, I get that. But is there a need to turn him into a total cartoon character?!?? It just dilutes the whole show. And the storyline of the tension beteween Reggie-Billy they have done good. And Reggie-Thurman, that is done pretty well. Not totally horrible. But the over-the-top Steinbrenner potrayal just takes away from the whole show and removes any credibility the series has.
Still 6 more of these shows left. I can only imagine where its going.
