The Buzz on Phins Run D

Fix the Oline your run D gets better. Hope you can figure that one out.

I think Starks doesnt want to play for this team anymore.

This kid Borland might make a difference.

Maybe we should go after Darryl Smith and pay him huge money since he did what Ellerbee did last year. MAke it happen Jeff

Fix your run D and your Oline might get better since they will have more time on the field/opportunities.

Well the only way to possible do either is to get a gm that might understand this

I like Jackson's idea of June 1stering Wheeler and drafting or signing another LB. I am also not opposed to seeing what Jenkins can do.

I am not totally down Ellerbe.

Not sure why Ellerbee gets a pass and Wheeler doesn't. Ellerbee was horrible versus run and did nothing rushing the passer.
At least Wheeler had played decent more than a few games before.
The hilarious thing is we could have signed Wheeler for cheap the previous year but Ireland didn't like him enough go figure

No surpise there. Ellerbee was poor in run defense and his vaunted pass rushing garnered one sack lol

The vast majority of Phans are ripping Ellerbe and Wheeler even more so, saying that there was no reason in hell for Ireland to sign them. Their play has justified the shots as it has been bad to worse, with few exceptions, as Barry points out with his PFF references.

However, their play the year before joining Miami was entirely different. Ellerbe played 667 snaps, had 5 sacks (#3 of all MLB/ILB), #3 in pass rush, and #13 vs the run. If you include his play in the Ravens SB run, he had 980 snaps (a full season) and would rank higher vs the run, same in the rush.

In 2012, Wheeler ranked #2 in the pass rush of 4-3 OLB, #5 in coverage, and #15 on the run. He also missed half as many tackles.

I liked the signings based on what they did the year before, and was very disappointed in how badly they dropped off. I don't think they forgot how to play the way they di but, we have all seen FA's take a year to adapt to their new teams and schemes.

IF that proves true here, Phans will be doing an about face on them, and be very happy Ireland signed them. Something to think about.

From Jackson's article:
"If the Dolphins released Wheeler, they would take a $6.4 million cap hit for 2014 if he’s cut with a post-June 1 salary cap designation, $10.4 million without one. His cap number is $6.4 million if he’s on the team.

Cutting Ellerbe appears far less likely; if the Dolphins surprisingly did, they would take a 2014 cap hit of $7.4 million, $11.6 million or $14.6 million depending on when they cut him. His cap number is $7.4 million if he's on the team.

In either case, if you designate them as post June 1 cuts you are taking their years salary as a cap hit. We are only projected to have 18 million, so if we cut wither of them we would be tying a third of that up in dead money, and would need to find a replacement.
I think regardless, they will both be on the team next season.

The problem with your assertion is that Ellerbee has less than a full season of data to determine to make him a high paid middle linebacker. He couldn't beat out the very very average Jameel Mcclain in his time with them and only by ijury did he play. So maybe Ellerbee is who they thought he always was and not the guy that came out of nowhere and had a good season last year. Maybe Wheeler is the same guy that Jeffy decided not to sign the previous year on the cheap. that's why u never sign a free agent to big money based on one season unless it was out of this world

Thought I read somewhere that Coyle and philbin wanted Wheeler / Ellerbe. Not defending Ireland but thought that is what I read. Also thought Egnew was Philbin's pick too? More indictment of these idiots, they do not have a clue.

Hope you're wrong on Starks, there is little out there in FA to replace him and Odrick has struggled vs the run. If not, maybe we can fix the OL in FA, and take a DT at #1 hoping it works out.

One other point of view to look at, and I am not completely defending Ellerbe and Wheeler as they flat out didn't play well enough and missed too many tackles, but in 2012 Miami's starting front four were Odrick, Starks, Soliai, and Wake. This year take out Odrick at RE and put in Vernon and you lose roughly 40lbs. Last year Miami was basically playing a 4 man front with three DT's which helped keep O linemen off the LB's and allowed them to roam more to the ball.

Ellerbe and Wheeler missed their share of tackles but they also encountered more O linemen getting to the second level than the LB's from 2012.

Wheeler is not being used correctly as he is better attacking the LOS and QB and not moving from sideline to sideline and in coverage. The Ravens thought enough of Ellerbe that they counted on him to be Lewis's replacement. Once again, not saying these guys didn't play up to expectations, but again, I don't feel this coaching staff schemes for the strength of the talent rather than trying to make the talent conform to their scheme, on offense and on defense.

Not sure about the McClain thing. My brother is a big Ravens fan, and said that Ellerbe was being groomed to replace Ray Lewis, and got his shot in 2012 when he played a couple hundred more snaps than McClain. No matter, he did play well, including the playoffs.

We shall see if Ellerbe, Wheeler, and Jones were the players of 2012 or 2013 but, it will take this year to find out.
