If the Titans have locked up McNair, and gave Mauck a start late last season, that tells me that Volek can be had. And for a third or fourth. And NOT break the bank. Let me repeat: NOT break the bank.
In my opinion, Volek throws one of the nicest deep balls in the league, dropping it in the bucket with routine accuracy. Consider also a 60%-plus career completion percentage, and a 2:1 TD/Int ratio, mostly for some pretty bad Titans teams lately.
In his first 9 starts Billy Volek racked up approximately 2,800 yards and 20 touchdowns. Do the math on that one and it translates loosely into 5,000 yards and 38 touchdowns over a 16 game schedule. That put his qb rating higher than any other qb in the history of the nfl for his first 9 starts. Higher than Montana, Elway, and everyone, ever. EVER.
He's already thrown for 400+ twice. One game 492 yards. That is pretty sick for someone who barely started. Mind you, he did this with his number one target being a former qb.
So make of it what you will, but the stats are all there.
As the Titans' O-Line dissolved, his numbers fell off, but not by much. The knock on him is his lack of mobility, but with Houck's line, and the fact that Frerotte isn't mobile NOR accurate, he'd be a marked improvement, and likely cost less than even Gus.
In the meantime, we can spend a draft pick on a QB to develop.
He's 30, hungry and good. He has the accuracy Gus doesn't, he's five years younger, and much cheaper.
Oh, and he's currently healthy.
