It’s looking more and more like the Tampa deal could go through with our Phins getting #5, #36 and #71 for the #2 pick. Gruden is not hiding his amore for Alex Smith. Obviously he feels he can caoch Smith up into a top tier QB.
So assuming we have the following picks, I would draft the following:
1 (5) – Cadillqac Williams
- With the chance of getting Ricky Williams back, it will be nice to have the elusive back and the power back in the fold. Williams & Co. could become a real threat for opposing defenses (see Atlanta’s Dunn and Duckett) for more. Of the three RB’s available, Cadillace has the most elusiveness of the bunch plus Saban has seen Cadillac up close for four years. To me, this would be the “safest†choice at #5 with Williams able to step in immediately into the #1 role.
2 (36) – Matt Jones
-I think here is where you can take a chance on a potentially dominating player. With the right coaching, Jones could mature into a terrific player. He’s got the intangibles and Saban has already called him the best player in the SEC the last two years running. His size speed combo will be a tremendous asset to Linehan. Take the chance here and our offense could be great. Imagine Jones working the slot in the base 3 receiver set. You think a Safety is going to be able to cover this guy? No way. And if the opposing defense lines up a CB on Jones that’s an automatic hot read. Jones will win that match up every time.
***The next two picks in the third round, we should go for injured players whose value has dropped because they couldn’t workout at the combine.
3 (70) – Andrew Walter
-Guy has a cannon for an arm and is the perfect choice to groom behind Feeley. A year of experience under his belt and time to heal and Walter will be ready to challenge Ferrotte next year as Feeley’s back up. Our Oline will become a powerful one that relies on solid protection – a system that strong-armed immoble QB’s like Feeley and Walter can thrive in. Not many realize how good Walter really is. He hurt his throwing shoulder mid season and would have been right up there with Smith and Rodgers had he remained healthy.
3 (71) – Ben Wilkerson
-Saban’s leader on offense for four years. A warrior at LSU who’s draft stock fell following an injury. Saban knows how good he is and how good he can become. He’ll come in as a rookie and challenge McKinney and Smith right away for the starting spot.
4 (98) – Ronald Fields
-We need to start filling in the depth behind Chester and Timbo. Kevin Carter is a short term fix at the other DT spot, but we need a good young run stopper as insurance behind our two recovering vets.
5 (130) – Chase Lyman
- This would be insurance against the Matt Jones pick. If you watched any of Cal’s games you know who the go-to guy was. It was Lyman. He was added to the draft late because he was denied his final year of eligibility by the NCAA. The guy has great hands, great size and adequate speed. He’s been injured most of his collegiate career, but when healthy is a top flight performer. He could fall to the fifth round and if he does we should nab him.
