"The Chads" - The right Mentor?

I for one was not for bringing in Chad Pennington, but may have found comfort in one thing regarding his signing. And that would be his mentoring of Chad Henne. W/Henne impressing the most in camp, I was hoping for him to be named the starter, as long he still looked the best after our last pre-season game. That obviously doesn't look like that's going to happen, because we didn't bring Penny in, paying him $11.5 mil to sit the bench atleast not this year. Still I have two concerns.

(1) Is Penny the right guy to mentor Henne? At first look, they appear to be two very different QB's. Penny is more of a controlled, short, but accurate type of passer. Where Henne so far reminds me of a take a chance, strong passer w/a deep threat. As far as mentoring, if McCown didn't sux so much, I'd say he'd be the best to mentor Henne. I'm sure most of doubt McCown will be around for long, but does the different styles concern anyone else?

(2) Is if Penny is just so - so, do we bring Henne in as we did w/Beck last year? I do believe Penny will help us win a few more games, but do we bring in the future (Henne) as soon as our playoff hopes are gone? I fully believe if (& when) Penny gets hurt, that we should bring in Henne right away, unless Beck somehow is leading at that point.

So is Penny the right guy to Mentor Henne?

And do we bring Henne in, as we did Beck last year?

Pennington is a strong leader who has made the best of his limited athletic ability. A guy like that is invaluable as a team player. I like the signing even though it really reminds me how pathetic our QB situation is when we have to sign Jester castoffs to upgrade our roster.

I totally agree. He is a leader & there's other things I do like about him, but as you said he's not the long term answer & what I was so excited about before the camps, etc.... became quite disappointing.

Obviously not all college QB's make the transformation to the Pro's, and less do it right away, but for whatever the reason I was really excited about his signing & performance in camp. Mistake's will be made like everyone else, yet his confidence level & no fear attitude that most spoke out of had me excited. Still, I guess he won't lose that as he watches Penny. I just hope he's not watching for too long. If Penny's winning, then have at it. But if he's not, then hopefully we let Henne get some experience & put bombs to Ginn on the highlight reel.
 
Pennington is a great leader who took control of the huddle his first day at practice. He will bridge the gap to Henne as Bledsoe did to Romo in Dallas. McCown will be cut at the final cut, although I heard a rumor surfaced on Xtreme Skins that Dallas is interested in acquiring Beck. Pennington will be our starter until Henne is ready to start. And if we need a long pass, we can bring Henne in since Penny doesn't have the arm strength.

I must admit it definitely seems that Pennington has converted pretty well, he didn't seem as confused as I thought he was going to be after starting only after being here for a week basically. I used to think that sometimes good college QB's have trouble ever going pro because they come in & sit for too many years. Rodgers? What I was really glad to hear the other day was that the coach sounds willing to start whoever is doing the best. I think it would shock Penny more then anyone if he doesn't start game 1, but hey give me 6 million a year to sit the bench and I'd be okay w/it.

I dont know why people think that a QB with different tools than his protoge can't be a "mentor".

Sure Pennington isnt going to show Henne how to throw a better deep ball, but he can damn sure teach him a thing or two about reading defenses, calling audibles, picking your spot, selling the playfake, and being patient.

And that, in my book, is good enough for me!
 
Don Strock didn't have near the ability or talent that Dan Marino had.. But Marino loved him. Strock really helped Marino a lot. He admitted to that often....... I think Pennington has the perfect demeanor and smarts for Henne to learn from. You saw Henne run to Penny after every series Saturday night talking to him.. Henne already is taking a lot of notes from Penny.
 
their playing style doesn't have much if anything to do with it. his intelligence is the key. if he can transfer some of those football smarts over to henne we'll be in business.

Exactly, wheather they are the "same player" dosnt matter as long as he can help him adjust to the NFL, that is what would make him a good mentor. I feel Penny is a good fit to be the mentor of Henne.
 
If I had to choose a QB in the NFL to help teach and mentor a rookie QB, Pennington would be one of my top three. The man is a true professional, a warrior, intelligent, patient, with a never give up attitude. Plus you never hear anything bad about Penny. Matter of fact no matter how much NY fans disliked Penny's inability to throw the 20 yd out they always said that the hardest thing to do was not like Penny. The Jets locker room was devided when Penny left and some say more than half didnt want Favre over Penny. That says alot when we all know Favre is a better QB physically. Penny took Clemens under his wing and prepared him enough to battle him for the starting job and those two were still friends with Penny still teaching him during their QB controversy. I believe Penny will do the same thing with Henne. So Penny we are going to trust you with Henne.
 
I read somewhere that the most naturally talented athletes don't make the best coaches.. Because they lived all their life relying on their talent that they overlooked the little things.. Guys like Pennington make the best coaches.. He doesn't have the biggest arm, but boy is he smart.. So I would have to say that he is absolutely the perfect mentor for the young Henne.. Don Strock wasn't the most talented fella, but he was a terrific coach and mentor, ask Marino
 
Pennington is about the best mentor you could have. He is really a selfless guy in comparison to more hyped quarterbacks. I don't think Tom Brady answers phone calls from Matt Cassel late at night, and his playing seemed to show it.
 
Pennington will have to stink it up pretty bad for Henne to start... or of course.. injury.

The Trifecta definately want Henne on the bench to watch and learn. I guarantee you they are going to go the Tony Romo route and let Henne mature. even if they have to play McCown. They're going to protect their investment.

But damn Henne looks good.
