The Chicago White Sox Thread

The Yankees are rumored to be interested in shopping Alex Rodriguez, and the Sox are being named in New York newspapers as one of the teams supposedly pursuing him. The Yankees are seeking starting pitching, and the Sox are expected to trade right-hander Freddy Garcia to make room for Brandon McCarthy in their rotation. Garcia told the Sun-Times in August that the Yankees are one of the organizations he would like to play for if he is moved. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said Rodriguez was not atop the Sox' priority list.

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox have exercised the 2007 club options on the contracts of left-handed pitcher Mark Buehrle, outfielder Jermaine Dye and second baseman Tadahito Iguchi. The White Sox also declined the 2007 club option on right-handed pitcher Dustin Hermanson.

The White Sox could aim for a younger player and try to trade for Boston's Coco Crisp or the Angels' Chone Figgins. But the Sox don't have a surplus of young pitching to trade after losing six prospects in trades and the Rule 5 draft in the last 12 months, which could rule out any shot at Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford.

If the White Sox would be willing to part with Brandon McCarthy, they might be able to pry away left fielder Carl Crawford from the Devil Rays.

A source in the organization said the White Sox will explore trading Neal Cotts this winter, leaving them in the market for another left-hander in the bullpen. Rookie Boone Logan wasn't the answer and fell out of favor with a ''big-league attitude,'' according to one Sox insider, to go along with control problems. The only in-house candidate who intrigues the Sox is knuckleballer Charlie Haeger, who can pitch a lot and go both long and short.

It might be a while before potential White Sox stars polish their skills in Venezuela for winter ball. Less than 48 hours after new Sox third-base coach Razor Shines was fired as LaGuaira's manager last week, prospects Josh Fields, Ryan Sweeney, Sean Tracey and Heath Phillips returned to the United States.

White Sox head athletic trainer Herb Schneider said Thursday that third baseman Joe Crede will rely on a rehab program instead of surgery to aid his back. Schneider, whose staff received a top distinction, said all other Sox are on track for the season.

Falling short of the World Series in 2006 left GM Ken Williams focused on fine tuning the White Sox for another October run in 2007. One of the first orders of business will be to find a way for reliever Brandon McCarthy to fit in the starting rotation.

Hope the Sox make some moves, bring in another bat. Sign a SS, to replace Uribe. Trade Vasquez, never liked that guy.

The Mets already have had conversations in recent days with the White Sox about acquiring one of their starting pitchers -- likely either Javier Vazquez or Freddy Garcia -- and they are paying attention in case the Marlins put Dontrelle Willis on the market or the Padres do the same with Jake Peavy.

Please trade Vazquez!!!!

The Rangers are exploring options to replace free-agent center fielder Gary Matthews Jr., who wanted more than $10 million a year to return, and are studying a possible pursuit of the White Sox's Brian Anderson. The Sox reportedly have scouted the Texas system intensely and could be interested in 24-year-old right-hander Nick Masset.

In the first trade between the two Chicago ballclubs in more than eight years, the White Sox acquired right-handed reliever David Aardsma and left-handed relief prospect Carlos Vasquez from the Cubs in exchange for pitcher Neal Cotts on Thursday.

It's possible the Rangers will sign or trade for a center fielder -- the two are considered equally viable options -- yet hold the door open for Gary Matthews Jr. If they were to add someone such as Dave Roberts (a free agent) or trade for the White Sox's Brian Anderson (the White Sox have an interest in pitcher Nick Masset), that player could slide into right or left field if Matthews re-signs with the Rangers.

Sources say the White Sox have strong interest in Braves center fielder Andruw Jones, who might be willing to waive his no-trade protection to play for Ozzie Guillen. Jones will be a free agent next season, but his agent is Sox nemesis Scott Boras, so that could be a deal-breaker.

Among the more interesting scenarios is a pitch that sources say the Angels made for White Sox right-hander Freddy Garcia, whom they highly covet. The Angels' deal would call for a package that includes right-hander Ervin Santana.

The Rangers have been considering a deal with the White Sox that could mean parting with top pitching prospect John Danks in exchange for workhorse Javier Vazquez. The White Sox, however, are also interested in reliever Nick Masset and the Rangers might prefer to deal him or could stop the talks all together.
