- (I could not find any place on the board where I could post this thread. It's not about the NFL or other pro football topics- which encompass pretty much all the board topics, so am posting it here) -

Kevin Kelley, the head football coach at Pulaski Academy in Arkansas, has gained renown [curiosity] in recent years for his gonzo football philosophy. He is the coach who almost never punts and almost always kicks onside after scores. The strategy has made his teams consistently successful. He is 77-17 at Pulaski, with two state championship appearances. It’s weird. It also works.

Will this brand of philosophy (video) change football as we know it today? Are NFL teams willing to draw up such unorthodox schemes in order to gain a statistical advantage over the opposing squad? No? Maybe? Well, consider this: HBOs Real Sports stated that at least one NFL team, the Atlanta Falcons, are interested in learning more about Kelley's strategic mind.

Your thoughts?

It's a statistical fact at NFL level also that going for it on fourth down is more likely to win you games than punting. but (naturally) coaches fear the backlash of making the decision, having it go wrong - as it must inevitably do some of the time - and have the media and fanbase baying for his blood.

So he punts. But if he had real balls, he wouldn't. He'd be like this guy.

If "going for it" is a better strategy, I don't believe it can be by a huge margin. When Fields was on his game, our punting team was a pretty good weapon for field position and points (shame in Miami's case it was usually 3 points and not 7).

It's a bonkers strategy that won't work in the NFL. You can't not convert and hand it over to the enemy in short yardage. It'll get you buried. That said, sounds like loads of fun though. It's like a video game strategy.

belichick brought him in to go over his methods etc...so did one other team who wishes to remain anonymous

TMQB has been talking about this guy for years...

they practice like 9 or 11 different onside kicks...3 kickers on the field even

There's something strange about how its always Kelly's going for it on 4th down.
