And hey, what do you know? They’re going to do it again. Patriots beat writer Doug Kyed pointed out to me that the Patriots structured the deals of their free-agents-to-be in a way that would qualify for draft pick compensation. Because the Patriots technically declined the options of Revis, Brandon Browner, and Vince Wilfork, all three should be eligible for draft pick compensation. Revis’s hefty deal with the Jets will likely qualify the Patriots for another third-round pick.

So Pats can cut guys but they formulat their contracts in such a way that they get the NFL to compensate them in picks?
How is this not an issue with people?
This is an incredible competitive advantage.

How the heck do the Pats lose Talib in FA and pick up Revis yet they still get a compensatory pick?

Because as a business, they run theirs better than anyone else. The only issue I have is envy, that our business is not ran as well as theirs. They aren't doing anything wrong... in fact, they're doing everything right.

The Pats find and exploit every loophole they can. It's not their fault that the NFL can't pass rules that the Pats can't find a way around.

I suppose it's just smart til they actually get caught for something which they will call a "grey area".

Please someone tell us this is not true! I'm in complete disgust right now.

Doing a smart thing is one thing but taking advantage of the rules is another. They get away with everything cause Goodell is a jerk who is in love with Kraft, Brady and bill.

Ozzy rules!!

:lol2: @ Marley7...Please, someone tell me your sig is not true! :)

Trade down for DGB would be ideal. To each their own, I have him as the third best receiver in the draft. Muahaha just be glad I'm not the GM!

lol...Dolphin fans. Complain about not signing every single free agent on the market and then complain when we don't get compensatory picks. Can't have it both ways. When you sign the highest paid free agent 3 years in a row you don't get squat in comp picks. Patriots traded for Revis on a one year rental, got themselves a super bowl and let all the high priced players go by opting out of the contracts...same as an expiring contract so they would count as a free agent loss. Next year they'll get two 3rd round comp picks for Revis, Browner and Wilfork...and probably a 7th for Ridley.

Compensatory picks shouldn't exist. Sign your damn players or sign someone else's, but shut the hell up about being compensated with picks. If the NFL wants that many players drafted, add another round. Otherwise, teams would have the opportunity to sign the players as UDFA.

I was just having some fun at your expense, it was first thing that came to mind reading your post LOL.
I would not draft him anywhere near #14, too many unknowns and question marks with the kid, but I get your point on that. He is a very rare type of player potential wise!!

Agreed!!! Why should a team be awarded for losing or letting go players. Just do away with the compensatory picks and add another round or not, but do away with the comp picks already!!

This. If this system is supposed to level the playing field it's failing miserably, the rich always seem to get richer.

Do you see me complaining about the fins lack of compensatory picks? NO
We chose to pay that money to FA's and the equalizer for us will be the Cap. NFL isn't pay to win.

There are already numerous built in advantages to level the playing field: Salary Cap, Draft position, Players go to teams like the Pats for less money then elsewhere.

But the Pats get a 3rd round pick for Talib despite turning around and signing Revis?

Pats didn't sign Revis, they traded for him. That's why he doesn't count as a free agent signing.

Don't get mad at the Pats because they know how to play the game better than anybody.

And I know the NFL isn't pay to win...someone should tell the Dolphins front office though.
