With thoughts of the AFC championship on my mind I can't help but think of our Beloved team The Miami Dolphins.

My Son (9) wanted a gold necklace from Santa for Christmas. The necklace had to have a Miami Dolphins charm (Just like Dad). He told me that several of his friends at school told him that the Dolphins "suck." I explained that they were just jealous that the Dolphins were so good.

Now the conversation has turned to how come they are not playing today in the AFC championship game. He recognized the Patriots and even commented "They win a lot". So he is confused why I don't like the Patriots. "They win a lot but the Dolphins don't. Dad don't you want to win?"

Just a little back ground.

So I am looking at NFL.com and I see a story about their punter, which really isn't a story about their punter it's about what it takes to win - "The Patriot Way". Not really anything most of us don't already know. But it quickly sums up what is special about the way they approach everything they do. Team is put first. In fact Willie Mcginist calls them a machine several times. They refer to Randy Moss and how when he went there he literally disappeared. He was swallowed up in the process because he was very visual on other teams, not on the Patriots - just part of the "TEAM".

But this story:http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap200...gainst-broncos , begs some questions.

Could we ever install this attitude here?

Bellicheck comes of as ****y. But he has SWAGGER. Something we definitely don't have according to our head coach. So if Coach has to look it up because he doesn't know what it is, is he the guy to get us some? Maybe, but maybe not. Having SWAGGER is buying into what your doing as an individual and as a team. There is continuity and consistency between the way the coaches coach and the way practice is run, etc. Doesn't the coach have to first believe in it himself?

Please watch the video and comment. It is not my intent to slam Philbin or anyone else. But collectively we can objectionably analyze and see were this team is. I personally believe we are light years off from "buying In". Putting team before the individual. We may just have a cancer that before anything else has to be eradicated before we can lay the foundation of success.

With the New England Patriots in our division and most likely again possibly going to the super-bowl something has to change because being the wild card and having to play them twice a year puts this team at an instant disadvantage, unless of course we kick their ass which I would prefer.

Do these players "buy in"? If the last two games are any indication I would say the answer is no.

We need to be thorough should anyone from the seattle, sf, dever or ne oragnization be availble for an interview

I agree we should look at known winners or at least personnel guys who have had better than one draft - our culture (what culture some would say

The culture started to change when they punted those guys off the team many were leadership council, player coach guys who actually tell the coach how the team is going to practice etc..., unfortunately Dansby was a good game day player.

I think the trajectory is going up we cannot get any worse at player evaluation than what we have seen over the past 6 years - hopefully we also bring in some leaders with the new wave. I still believe that Philbin has the ability to coach, but I give him one year, he better get it on track, or he is GONE

Would"ve been great if The Phins could've got Harbaugh as HC, he may whine, but he brings toughness to the teams he's coached.

I think this just makes clear how vitally important a head coach's demeanor and attitude is to a team. I look at a guy like Gus Bradley in Jacksonville. Before the season, analysts were claiming that the 2013 Jaguars might be the worst team in NFL history. They had no viable QB on the roster, which was not Bradley's fault. They lacked established talent at just about every position on the field. During the season, they had turmoil like former first round pick Justin Blackmon being suspended for the season, losing current top pick Luke Joeckel to a season-ending injury, etc.

And still, they played extremely hard for their coach, talked all season how he was creating a culture where failure was unacceptable, and ended up winning 4 games...with a terrible offensive line and the worst QB situation in the league. Far from the worst team in NFL history.

Not to imply that the Jaguars are a good team, or that we should have wanted a 4-win season, but Bradley is a coach that did more with less. Philbin and his array of terrible coaches did less with more. And there is no culture being built here outside of a culture of instability.

Yes Sir. I believe we have not had that culture here since Shula left. Until we get it back, it will be a longer then necessary road to recovery. It has to start in the front office and filter it's way down. I am sure that us not being able to get over the hump starts there and until alignments of staff to gain power and the infighting ceases for the betterment of the "TEAM", we are just going to continue to spin our wheels.

Not sure if player evaluation the last 6 years has been as much of a issue as everyone wants to believe it has. Of course most want to have someone to blame so they blamed our GM. Now he is gone, but we have essentially left the same people in place in other areas. The beauty of the "Patriot way" is that all the coaches are on the same page and coach the same. The players are all treated the same and the players are expected to do well. They are also expected to buy into the system. If there is any belief by any coach the player doesn't buy in 100%, the player is history and they know it. Amazing how you can take a mediocre player and elevate him to very good just by the environment they are put in. Lots of players have left the Patriots and have been average elsewhere.

I hope Ross gets it. My impression is he doesn't because we are going to go into next year with essentially the same systems, with the same players and the same coaches. But we are going to expect different results: Insanity

Step 1: Having a quarterback who can play well enough to inspire a belief among the players that they can be highly competitive as a team.

Step 2: The development of player leaders, who use their innate leadership ability and draw on that belief in their ability to compete (noted in step 1) to inspire their teammates to give their maximum effort.

Without those ingredients, it's tough to develop a winning culture on a professional football team in my opinion. We're still working on step 1, which is why we might as well focus there to the exclusion of any other factors right now.

Still working on step 1 going into year 3. Is this a 20 yr plan? Tannehill is being coached by a rookie QB coach and is now going to be without the guy he went all thru college with.
