With the Miami Dolphins 2011 training camp progressing into its second week, the left tackle position has been rock solid through the first eight practices. As usual, the left tackle position has stonewalled some of the Dolphins' best pass rushers. Linebackers, and pass rush specialists, Cameron Wake and Jason Taylor have both met the wall that is the left tackle.

The problem? It's not Miami's All-Pro left tackle Jake Long.

It's Lydon Murtha.

Who?

That's right, it's Lydon Murtha.

Murtha was a seventh round draft choice by the Detroit Lions in 2009. In September of that year, the Lions stashed the offensive tackle onto their practice squad. A month later, the Dolphins signed Murtha from the Lions' practice squad.

And now, with Long resting a sore knee, Murtha is showing an ability to excel at the left tackle position. So, who is Lydon Murtha?

Murtha, a 6'7", 315 lbs. monster, was born in Homestead, Florida, but grew up in Minnesota. Electing to go to Nebraska, Murtha started 23 games for the Cornhuskers, appearing in 40 total games over his four years. Murtha graduated as a 4-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection.

Can he play RT? That's where the glaring weakness is now that Carey is at G. Colombo doesn't instill much confidence

Swing tackle this year maybe starter next, earlier if Columbo continues to struggle. He is a guy that looks to have taken a huge step forward from last year.

Yeah, I am hoping they throw him in at RT when Jake gets back. Don't see Colombo as the answer there.

I've seen Murtha play, and if he's stonewalling now, then I think we need to make sure that Big Jake didn't switch jerseys.

hes always had the athletism and size. Maybe he just needed a couple of years to sit back and learn/develop from good coaches.. but ya he was abysmal in the past

Murtha sucks.

Yes because reports of him stonewalling All-Pro Cam Wake and Veteran Pass Rusher JT must mean he sucks right? That makes sense.......

the "{insert name} sucks" posts really are the biggest waste of space on this site

I'd rather see him back up Long than move to RT. RT is more of a roadgrader position. Murtha is big and agile which is who you want protecting the QB's blindside. That would be great if he could excel at RT, I just don't see that as his natural inclination.

Bizarrely his short shuttle and 3-cone drill times at his combine were faster than the likes of Kory Sheets, Chris Clemons, Reshad Jones ...

He looked big and strong last year, but extremely slow. He seemed to get beat regularly then.

You mean this team figured out how to develope talent in the offseason...... oh wait.... nevermind. Good for him sounds like he is taking the next step.
