The Curious Case of Lydon Murtha

Ok, so whydid he suck so bad last year. And I don't only mean suck, but SUCK

Maybe first time starting in the NFL and not really getting as many reps as he needed to get ? I would not say he was all pro but he far from sucked. For never starting an NFL game in his life IMO, he did not do half bad. I am not even convinced yet until I see him play myself he is up to speed but from what I have read about him from the scrimmage so far, he did not do half bad against the ones and our ones are pretty dam good.

For those banging on the drums again about Oline this, terrible in scrimmage. For some of these guys it was their third day or practice for the rest of them, it was their 8th day of practice. Sure they mixed and matched them, only way to see what you have. If you were there and actually knew football and knew what you were watching, most of the times the Oline ' sucked ' was when people were in there that are not starters or starters were scattered here and there. I think some people had too much Dioxin put in their meatballs when they were babies sometimes.

It's very interesting...

Murtha is an athletic "freak" for an offensive lineman in terms of the way he tests and his movement skills... but as the link pointed out, his play never matched his physical talent... if it did, he would've been a top 10 pick..

Offensive tackles with the specs of Murtha get drafted in the 1st round every year, even when their play doesn't match their specs... because of upside.

Players can develope people... they mature, develope a work ethic, and suddenly something will "click" inside their head in terms of what they're supposed to be doing...

What makes it interesting to me is that Murtha's freakish movement skills and athletic ability fits what the new blocking scheme is going to require. Carey wouldn't be able to get it done at right tackle on stretch plays that require zone blocking... and elements of the ZBS are becoming increasingly more necessary to off-set the influx of 3-4, and multiple set defenses that are being installed everywhere you look now...

You want to be able to get push from your interior offensive lineman in short yardage situations... but you want to create creases and cutback lanes through the "B" and "C" gaps with mobile, athletic offensive lineman... it's the way the running game works nowdays.

Wrong, everyone sucks that played yesterday. They are all bad. We should overpay overweight useless McKinnie right now. Pay old and often injured O"Hara anything he wants. Resign Jake Grove, although his shoulder is being held together with a shoe string, Pay Smiley another 25 million, screw he is injured and cannot move, he is great and last but not least, Give Donald Thomas a 6 year 42 million dollar contract even though no other NFL team is interested in him, hey, what do the other 31 other teams know anyway. Yeah, do all of the above and we will be great again. Come on, get a clue ( all sarcasm of course :) ) sad to say though, thats the general theme around here.

I am shocked people are defending Murtha like he is Dwight Stevenson or that someone started a thread killing Cam Wake. It is Lydon freaking Murtha who was a turnstile last season folks. You are one week into camp and people want him starting at RT or think they can get two 1st rounders for him.

Lets see what happens Friday against John Abraham.

Don't expect him to do much against Abraham at all. Matter of fact, may get his jock handed to him but thats why he will be a RT.. Not many Offensive tackles can do much against Abraham anyway. Long got eaten up last year in the mud bowl infield pre season game by Abraham. No big deal. Abraham eats large babies for breakfast daily. I guess you do remember last years first pre season game against Atlanta. Both Carey and Long were lacking great deal. Thats why its called pre season my man. This years pre season games are going to be even uglier for some, get ready for it.. LT making LT start for the first time and still a journey man. C a rookie and I do not care what his last name is. and a RT that was injured most of 2010 and you actually ring up lets see how Murtha does against Abraham ??????? LMAO. Yeah, you are a true true fan and I can tell how you understand the game of football. Oh yeah, throw in a brand new offense they have only practice on for less then two weeks against a good defense that has not changed one bit nor has its schemes changed. Tell you right now, you do not have to wait, its going to be fugly. There, you feel better now about your thoughts on the game ?

we will see how good he is the next few weeks

No we won't. Next few weeks are going to be settling in, get down to earth weeks for this entire offense. Like I said, not saying yet Murtha is the answer but very few teams have a Jake Long out and a backup that is as good as Jake Long behind him. No teams as a matter of fact. Unless of course someone of knowledge can point one out to me. I would appreciate it.

All i can ask for, is that, Murtha continues his surprisingly good play, and somehow, solidifies the Offensive Line ... Lord knows it was really bad last season ... Every team has stories such as Murtha's, where a player comes from out of nowhere and becomes a solid, NFL player and Contributor .. just look at Cam Wake, it took him 2 years in the CFL and his complete dedication to become the player he is today ... IF Murtha, can continue his solid performance and wins a starting job on the O-Line, perhaps maybe the RT position, well More power to him, he did his job and improved to the point, where he contributes to a team as a starter? and perhaps surprises all the non believer's and actually becomes part of a Rock Solid unit that kicks *SS on Sunday's!!!

Let's hope he can be a stonewall at RT this year.

He did well at RT last season vs DETROIT, but got injured. MAYBE the "light" has gone on for MURTHA. If so, MIAMI just lucked out: I never saw a lack of physical talent as his problem.

And fancy that! MIAMI actually getting lucky for a change, finding a starting-calibre 25 Year old T on someone's P/S, and who NEVER played for DALLAS!!!

Hopefully he can save this team! It all rests on his shoulders now.

i thought murtha did ok in 2010 when he got run...better than i expected...looking forward to seeing his play this preseason...might make a good right tackle in our scheme

I hope he continues to develop and may very well be a RT to start the year, but people claiming nobody has a "click" moment our team has on named Cam Wake who was kicked off teams and had to got he CFL. James Harrison was cut from what 4 teams and now is an all pro you just need the opportunity and to realize that everyone around you is mega talented and with the tools he has once he what seems like CAME to that realization he put in the work and if he plays well at LT until Jake gets back def look for him to move to RT.

And if he continues to develop and get better at RT 4 of the 5 spots are solidified WHICH WE WANT SO STOP BITCHING, so while I am not crowing him anything yet I am this guys bandwagon leader hoping he turns out to be a good RT in this league so our line is set for years to come.

Go Murtha!!!!

The negativity on this site always amazes me. Its not like we traded a 2nd round pick for him! We got him off the practice squad and people criticize him because an article says he is doing well?

Many rookie linemen drafted in the 1st round struggle in their first year. Jake has spoiled us because he has done so well, but you can't expect a 7th round pick to develop into a pro-bowler overnight.

Lets at least give him a chance, its not like we have a huge investment put in him. There is minimal risk, but if he continues to progress the reward could be substantial.

Murtha was never anywhere near as bad as some on this site made out. I'm not the least bit surprised he is coming on strong in camp.

The biggest concern over Murtha isn't whether he will develop into a decent OLineman, it's his durability.

He should never start and be expected to last a full year.
