Remember, there are cameras in the room. It would be difficult for someone to fire even if it were a private meeting.
Philbin need to stop worrying about the feelings of the players though(the added drama is for Hard knocks). It doesn't need to be handled delicately, but in a straight forward business like manner.

why, every clip they showed sean was offbalance... I feel bad for chad, but if you can't get separation from sean smith, your time has passed.
 
One thing to keep in mind also is that Ireland does the real "firing" just like that derrik guy from the first episode, Philbin kind of gives the reason behind the firing more so than the actual message itself.
 
couple things here.

1. Dont feel sorry for chad. I dont think the head butt was what got him gone. It was the behavior. Philbin is a family man and if you wish to put stuff out there for the whole world to see, it obviously would bother him. Thats why he says "its just not a good fit". Coach laid out the plan clearly for him. Chad went on his hollywood again.

2. Shula used to get raked in the media for cutting players as they were getting wrapped for practice, preseason game, ect. Philbin was very very nice and respectful. just a comparison.

really? philbin doesnt handle himself well? really now. Chad is just an outstanding citizen then? dude....for real.
 
I think he needs to not beat around the bush. When Chad Johnson came in, he should have said "Chad, we have to release you. You have been cut from the team.....and here is why and yada yada." instead of well, we kinda gotta sorta release you maybe.
 
I thought Philbin handled that pretty badly on the whole, when Chad was talking and saying how sorry he was for letting everyone down, all you could hear was Philbin drumming his fingers on his chair, seemed to be impatient to hear Chad out and wanting to getting on with cutting him. Then he mumbles something about not being a good fit and saying it's not him making an example out of Chad, fidgeting all the time.
I really was sorry to see Chad get cut, thought he could have been great for the organization, obviously it was the only call to make. But I felt for the guy especially after seeing that.

The more I see of Philbin in this show the more I worry to be honest, as someone mentioned earlier, he does not appear to handle confrontation well at all. The guy lacks any kind of personality at all, his humorless remarks to the rookie who had his head and eyebrows shaved shows he's really not a people person or really understands whats going on there. I don't think Sherman either has come over very well so far.

I'm sure I'm reading too much into the shows but hey that's all we've got to go on so far, I also wonder how much the loss of his son has affected his demeanor, that's got to be the hardest thing in the world as a parent myself I can't imagine the pain that he and his wife have gone through. A parent should never have to bury their child.
 
In my previous position in management, I probably fired about 8 - 10 people and suspended a few others. It's not fun. It's not comfortable. As another poster said, it's awkward. I know the outcome, the person I'm firing has a good idea of the outcome, but the process of telling someone they are losing their job is hard - no matter how many times you have done it. Remember - they have families at home and who knows what else is going on in their lives. In all cases, these people brought the firing upon themselves, but it still doesn't make it any easier.
 
Honestly, I'd like to know why the **** WR's feel that they're entitled to be divas.

The greatest WR of all time (Jerry Rice) was the exact opposite of this behavior.

I know I have been in the same position it is just plain awful, but he just didn't handle it well at all, even considering that. You hear the guy out, you practice what you are going to say over and over and you be clear and firm in delivering the message, while at the same time showing them that you understand their situation and wish them all the best. That looked like the first time he's ever done that in his life, he's been in coaching for an age, this is his first head coaching job so perhaps it is or perhaps the cameras affected him, even though he says he doesn't watch the show (sure...)

I totally agree with what you said about ow it should be done. I don't think it was that bad though. I think it is crappy to do it in front of the camera in this case. I don't know the exact agreement with Hard Knocks but I don't think they should have had that on camera. Bad week for the guy, no question, no one deserves a week like that.

True in this case. The finger tapping was odd. A little too casual in this case, giving the seriousness of the meeting. I mean the guy good or bad had his life ruined this week.
