People around here have been overrating Chris Chambers for quite some time.
Chris Chambers was a 200m track guy at Wisconsin. Chris is 5'11", but he is a very long stridder. The 200 suited him perfect. It was a sprint, but since Chris had the gallop, he could sprint the long distance without wearing down. Chambers is a 4.4 guy and is a natural fluid runner.
This said, Chambers is missing something that his running stats have covered up. Explosion. Chambers' biggest weakness has been his route running. Chambers' stride effectivly accounts for a slower than thought muscle twitch, which becomes apparent when breaking in and out of cuts. The cutting patterns such as the square in and out are more difficult. The double move is virtually out of his arsenal. The sharp posts and flags are a bit rounded. Chambers is a great athlete with tremendous body control and has proven he needs extra attention, but when defenses focus on him, this lack of explosion accounts for his inconsistancy. His 4.4 speed is fast, but every corner in the league is fast. Without some extra pop, the deep ball wont be coming any time soon for Chambers.

i guess thats why he was an all pro last year.

Two years ago, I thought... maybe this guy Chambers is really a #2 receiver. I changed my mind last year. He is an "average #1". His receiving yards are on pace to catch Duper and Clayton.

He's not TO, or Steve Smith, or Chris Carter, or Jerry Rice. He's better than half of the NFL's #1 receivers though.

Last year CC was all-pro,,,,this year he is all-slow. I think the problem is not CC, it is Moolarkey. When we lost Linehan we lost most of our offense...that is why Moo has to go. :tantrum:

Id say he's on par with Amani Toomer as far as ranking in the league.

Surely that could be part of it.
Linehan made him overacheive
Mularkey made him underacheive.

To me his biggest problem seems to be he can't make the mundane easy catch. He seems to be able to make the dramatic difficult catch, but not the regular easy ones. He also doesn't seem to get open quickly or very well. He doesn't present a good target for our QB in a timely manner. That might be CC or it might be Boolarky - who HAS to go IMHO. Chris has been this way ever since he got here though, except seemingly last season, so Linehan must have had something to do with THAT.

How many times was CC open last week but Joey mis-fired ??? i lost count. CC didn;t forget how to play in a few months time..... the offense STINKS !!!

Consistency - key word.
Nobody is saying CC cant do it.
But everyone in the league gets overthrows. You cant blame his #'s on overthrows.

Disagree with most everything in that post.

At the NFL Combine Chambers had an 11'2" broad jump, and a 45 inch verticle. He initially had a 4.00 shuttle and I believe a 6.77 cone drill, both of which are quite good trust me...but then went back to his college campus and blistered off anywhere from a 4.27 to a 4.39 time in the 40, and a 6.46 second cone drill. That cone drill is the fastest I've ever heard of, period.

You don't get the fastest cone drill I've ever seen or heard tale of by being a slow cutter, or not having enough fast twitch in your step.

BTW, Chambers is closer to 6'0" than 5'11". He's 5 feet, 11.625 inches, to be exact. Was 210 pounds when they measured all his agility and speed measurements.

His problem is and has always been consistency. He can be the most fantastic route-running, leaping, hands-catching, toe-tapping, physical ball-hawking, and mentally aware player in the game on one play, and then be just average on the next.

I just notice the way Pennington even gets the ball to his #1 man so much. Chambers is by far a better WR than coles but coles get 20 passes to him a a game while chambers get 5 if he is lucky.

-- Is Chris still on the team... haven't seen him much recently :) Anyways, I agree with this observation; last year, Chris had a problem catching "low passes". Especially around the knees. He would start running, and knock the ball out with his knee. He seemed to play better at the end of last year.

I haven't seen if he has this problem this year.

This year a lot of the problem is the offensive focus on the short areas. It's just not Flanker-Friendly. The Flanker runs your deeper routes and most everything Joey's throwing is under 10 yards. The slot is getting a lot of action.

Saban promised not too long ago that they were gonna work on getting Chambers into the slot like they did late last year to get him more involved helping us break games open.

That one ticks me off...should have been happening from the start.
