The Dolphin Backup Qb situation.

I had a friend who was a drummer. He understood cord theory better than i did. Very dis-heartening.

I worked at the Baldwin Piano & Organ Co, for just under 10 years, most of it in the Church Organ department. I learned a lot about the history of music via the history of the pipe organ and developed a taste for the "classical" music written for that instrument.

Bach's stuff was really very good, even though he had a lot of "flourishes" written in that were so difficult that only he could play them. I did not know he was the best organ player in the world at that time, even though those organs had relatively few stops compared to what we were putting on the larger two and three manual organs.

A bunch of us were young men and when we were first introduced to some of those stops with "funny" names we had a lot of "fun" with them. Examples are the 16' ***got, or the 5 2/3' Plein Ju. Simpler stops like the "Tibia" were just too gross to think about. Then there was the "Vox Humana", what an arrogant concept to begin with.

Besides, I enjoyed playing the guitar.

PM me if you want to know how I pissed off Chet Adkins when I wasn't even there. This was when we owned Gretsch, and our guitar maker had just finished making a dedicated guitar for Chet called the Country Gentleman.

See, I was special way back then in the 1970's and 1980's. - LOL
I can play the happy birthday song on acoustic guitar...

100% agree... we should be looking for another QB next year. If we found the right guy, we'd be able to move on from Tua if injuries reoccur. Even if the young guy eventually walked after 4 years, we'd get value from the pick.

That said... I do not think Thompson is a write off yet. One half of work with some questionable receivers is not a true read on what he could do running the 1s.

Too many fanboys see a bad read or a hurried throw in the first pregame and think they've seen it all. Hell... the vanilla stuff that the team shows in public practices is suspect. There's no way that an NFL team doesn't keep their real offense for when there's no press or fan present.

Same reason the Canadian soccer team cheated with the drones...
Thompson is terrible, he can't read defenses, he plays like a fill in, he doesn't have the instincts and timing to use his offensive weapons, those receivers are basically running wind sprints in the passing game.

Case Keenum could be a possibility if they release him.
The Browns backup QB situation is another one to pay atention to.

Somebody is going to be the odd man out between Dorian Thompson Robinson, Tyler Huntley and Jameis Winston.

DTR is the most likely of them to be released and he had a decent game the other night, 14-18, 134 yards and a 97.7 QBR.
Any of those guys would be upgrades over what we have.

The backup question is almost unimportant to me. Reality is, if your team doesnt have a top 10 QB, they're looking to replace him asap because they know they need better to win games in the NFL.

Most fans agree with that statement.

And then you get arguments like this were you're looking for someone OUTSIDE of the top 32 to do the job in case of injury. Is it possible? Sure! But the odds are so thin that it just feels like a waste of time even debating about it. At least to me.

The backup position to me has nothing to do with salvaging a season, it should be about specific skill players that you feel you could get up to par 2-3 years down the road. And to be fair to the discussion at hand... no. I Don't feel like either White or Thompson fit the description.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Moore, Don Strock and Earl Morral say hello.

You might if all the following conditions prevail:

1) You have a tight cap that can be improved by trading one of our two backup QB's and reducing our payroll.

2) You can find an experienced Vet with the following skill sets & experience:
a) A Vet who has some playoff experience
b) A Vet who can provide the experience and skill set our PS QB will need, when playing as the "opposing team" QB in practice. (This is really important)
c) A Vet who has shown that he can come into a new system and be effective after just three or four games as a backup with the new team.

3) A vet who will be willing to come in at a price that will not reduce the newly increased cap space too much.

How well does Tannehill fit that set of requirements?
All of them.

Here’s the thing:

There was a DISTINCT and pervasive narrative early in his career that Tannehill couldn’t throw a deep ball.

The fuel for this argument was that he couldn’t hit Mike Wallace in stride. In retrospect, this was like blaming Zach Wilson’s OL coach for his failures.

Tannehill ended up being one of the best deep ball throwers in the league. Imagine what might have happened if someone had tried to fix his pocket presence issues with something smarter than CHASING HIM AROUND IN PRACTICE WITH A MOTHER******* BROOM?
When you put a rookie in a position where he’s standing in the middle of I-95 during rush hour every time he goes back to pass he will not develop pocket presence. Period EOS. We ruined that kid’s confidence.

I do wonder if he’d be willing to come back here. The guy made nearly $200 million in his career. Part of me imagines him saying “You want me to play backup in Miami for $3mm? **** that. I’ll make that much in interest this year.”

I don't see Miami making a change......

I have not been a fan of bringing Tannehill back, mostly due to style and fit issues, but I'm warming up to the idea.

Whether it is us or someone else....RT is going to be a hot commodity once a starting QB goes down

Agree. Didn't really bring in anyone to compete for #2. Not even a real hint of contact with Tanne or any other past starter. No effort to spend big on any position recently. Barring a surprise cut, it seems to be SK/white

Or, if he is like some posters here, he'll say - OK - I'll show the world what a big mistake you made with me years ago.

Revenge is a dish best served cold. - LOL

It's strange that Grier places little importance on Interior oline and backup QB. He backs up the Brinks Truck for his undersize QB who is also quite injury prone. I can't see the logic in not protecting an injury prone QB who just got paid big money. If he gets injured because our Guards couldn't pass block, in trots your crummy back up. I was all for paying Tua but then buiding a serious wall to protect him. Grier is rolling the dice that the oline is good enough. They were barely good enough last year and we got worse at two positions, C and RG. A better back up makes greta sense to me but who, not Tannehill, this town is sick of him.

Tannehill makes all the sense in the world. He can certainly run a PA offense, and throws a pretty deep ball.

I wouldn’t mind Zappe if he’s cut loose.

There will probably be a half-dozen options better than Thompson or White, but I’m not confident Miami will take any of them.
I don't think Tannehill can play with the type of anticipation that is necessary in this offense, but I do think he would be an upgrade over White or Thompson.
