The Dolphin Backup Qb situation.

I was thinking about this this past weekend.

Tannehill has stretches of of great accuracy but the anticipation and pocket presence leave a lot to be desired.

Having an athletic QB as backup might not hurt. However, the only names I could come up with were Malik Willis & Trey Lance. That said, I don't think either are scheme fits. So, scratch that idea.

This leaves a veteran journeyman QB. Someone like Josh Dobbs* could be possibility. Thoughts?


* = currently w/ SF competing to back up Purdy.

Comp % is not a true measure of accuracy.

Didn't you watch him play when he was a Dolphin?

How many times did we see him complete a pass but force the receiver to slow down and wait for the ball, or reach back for it?

He wasted so many yards doing that, it used to infuriate me.

McD's Passing Offense is based on hitting guys on the move so they can run after the catch.

Ni stats you can dig up will show that RT is good at that.

He’s a perfect fit for this team and this offense at this point in his career. Name someone better who’s available without a trade or a big contract? You can’t. You also failed to address the talent he was playing with in Miami (led the league in sacks numerous years) and the incompetent coaches he played for in MIA, or the fact that he played for primarily a running team in Tenn. Move on dude. Your opinion means nothing if it isn’t backed up with facts.

He was running for his life in Miami until he had a major injury. RT is one tough SOB.

I’m not too worried about long-term upside when it comes to the back up really. I’m hoping Tua can stay healthy every year and be the long-term answer.

I think a former starting quarterback, who has had lots of gametime action would be ideal. Who that is, I’m not sure.

The backup question is almost unimportant to me. Reality is, if your team doesnt have a top 10 QB, they're looking to replace him asap because they know they need better to win games in the NFL.

Most fans agree with that statement.

And then you get arguments like this were you're looking for someone OUTSIDE of the top 32 to do the job in case of injury. Is it possible? Sure! But the odds are so thin that it just feels like a waste of time even debating about it. At least to me.

The backup position to me has nothing to do with salvaging a season, it should be about specific skill players that you feel you could get up to par 2-3 years down the road. And to be fair to the discussion at hand... no. I Don't feel like either White or Thompson fit the description.
 
From the practice reps standpoint and from what we saw vs. the Falcons, I think Skyler has pulled ahead of White.

Things could still change, but these coaches seem to make decisions fairly quickly...

I don't see it as quite that simple.

It's fair to say if Tua is out for the season or long term that, yes, it really doesn't make much difference.

Where I differ is that there is another scenario where Tua misses a game or three. The difference between winning the division and missing the playoffs might come down to a game or two.

The backup needs to be able to function efficiently and effectively within the scheme. He doesn't need to be a hero. He just needs to not be atrocious and not give away a winnable game.

Do we have that? Hard to say, but we have what we have. It isn't likely going to change at this late date.
