I agree. Parcells' teams are based on their 34 defenses. Those defenses are built around OLB's. We have one good OLB on the team, Porter. I like Matt Roth, he's a good guy, and I was pleasantly surprised by him last year, but he's simply a journeyman at the SOLB position. He stops the run ... and that's it. Aside from being a 2 down set-the-edge guy, he's simply not good enough. Charlie Anderson and the rest we have there are situational pass rushers at best, and at worst pure journeymen themselves. Porter is 32 and has picked up some nicks. There's no way Parcells and his disciples let the team flounder ahead with 1 quality pass rusher who is old. I'll be shocked if we don't select an OLB on the first day, and frankly, unless all the quality picks are gone at 25, I expect us to take someone like Matthews, Cushing, Barwin, Maybin, or maybe even the darkhorse Johnson at 25. But, if we don't take one at 25 for whatever reason (trades, dropping value player, all top eschelon OLB's gone, etc.), I definitely expect us to grab one in round 2, with names like English and Sintim being the likely candidates.
A poor CB can cover for 3 seconds, a good CB can cover for 5, and a great CB can cover for maybe 7, but having a good pass rush means that rarely will any of your DB's have to cover for more than 4 seconds .... making all of your DB's look good. If you want to improve your secondary, generate a pass rush. That's what the 34 is designed to do ... put run stuffers in the middle and pass rushers on both edges. Right now we have only 1 edge pressuring the QB, and if he gets hurt .... woe is us (excuse the poor English).
People not predicting us to draft a pass rusher early either don't know what they're talking about, or have some very good inside information on a trade.
