As fans of the NFL we fall into the trap that NE and Scott Pioli are somehow geniuses at roster management. When Rick Spielman traded a 4th rounder to move up one spot in the 1st round in 2004 for Vernon Carey, it was widely believed that NE had bluffed the Dolphins into overpaying to move up with the Vikings. That may be true. Spielman did overpay, despite Carey's contributions to the team. But, maybe it was the Vikings who duped Spielman, not NE. Maybe Carey was worth it after all. This is all open for debate. Spielman is now working in Minnesota as the VP of pro personnel, so maybe he isn't universally viewed as the idiot that Dolphins fans are certain he is.

But that isn't my main point. My main point is that maybe NE has just been very lucky for a long time. Sure Belichick is a great coach. Though he stuck with the recently retired Bledsoe as his starter despite the obvious(???) talent of his backup Tom Brady. It took an injury to Bledsoe for Belichick to become the "genius" coach who rode Brady to 3 Super Bowls. Brady has been great. The Patriots have been successful. Whether they are geniuses or not, they have become the "team of the decade" and no other team is even close right now.

But when Randy Moss and Darrel Jackson are being dangled for 4th round picks, you have to question the wisdom of NE and Pioli for giving up a 2nd and 7th to a division rival for a marginal player. Wes Welker, for all his fan support and heart, is no Moss or Jackson. If they can be had for a 4th, and that remains to be seen, Wes's value is no more than a 5th at best. Despite his youth and versatility, Wes is no blue chip superstar. The Dolphins robbed NE on this move. As Dolphin fans lets hope that this is the first move that makes Mueller and Cameron into "geniuses" in the future. Go Phins.

The patriots are not lucky,,there just good,,,,its about value,,wes will immediately be their fulltime punt and kickoff returner and do that job well like he did for us,,,he will also be their troy brown and use him just like they did troy for 10 years,,,all that is worth a second round pick

a true football player, a tough guy, and a "motivate by doing" mentality-hard to replace...

To be honest. I cringed every time Wes received a punt because I feared him fumbling it. Just like I feared Mare missing a FG. When a player creates that fear in your mind than it's time for a change. Maybe I'm not the only one with that fear.

Wes was worth more to us than a 5th round pick.

The reason NE traded a 2nd round pick for him was because we put the high tender on him and NE obviously saw that they could utilise him better than what we had done. Which is entirely true. When you have Tom Brady and a great offensive line then you can make more use of solid recievers that are known to catch the ball consistently and on 3rd downs.
He may not have been worth a 2nd to us but to the Patriots it was worth it to them.

normally, i would agree His'n... but i like Welker and his approach to the game... and i really fear the rapport he will form with Tom Brady and a disciplined short passing game like theirs... -- the first decent passing game he'll be playing under...

Welker on the Pats will be a success, and perhaps well-worth a 2nd round draft choice for what he'll bring to the Pats... (and, they have plenty of others picks as it is)....

of course, the proof in the pudding is what this new regime does with that late 2nd round pick...

We did steal from them and it might bite be the reason we get Brady Quinn because we might use that pick in a trade to get Quinn.

I like Welker, too, but he still wasn't worth the signing price or the loss of a 2nd round pick. I don't think the Patriots have been lucky personnel-wise (well, actually I've been convinced for years that they have a pact with Satan, but that's for another day) and their success had more to do with recognizing talent and personalities that would thrive in their scheme. I do, however, think that this year's moves in free agency look more like the big name, quick fixes they've done such a good job of avoiding in the past, and it all seems like desperation to get one last big run before it all falls apart. Basically, they're panicking.

LOL... ...Although very funny, we must all come to terms with the fact that the Patriots have made better use of our guys than we have. Look at what they did with all of the players they got from us from Byers to Evans. They will get quality from Welker. I do not think we made a horrible decision, but he is well worth what we got for him. If it gets a franchise QB in a year or two from the deal, then I would say that an all pourpose kick returner and a third reciever are much eisier to replace than a franchise QB...So all in all, we did what we had to. I think we have all of that on our roster right now anyway.(all except the franchise QB)

Does Welker play hard? Of course he does.

Honestly though he is what he is. A very good #3 WR. Anyone remember games where Booker was injured? Those were the games Wes disappeared because he was expected to be a #2 WR. Anytime you can get a 2nd rounder for your #3 WR it's a good move.

mornin' mizzz Mary !... ehhh, it was his first year Alex, don't throw him out with the bath water yet bro.

STILL upset about this move. It's gonna kill me to see Wes play for the Patsies. Morning Marty.

At first I thought it would kill me to see him in a Patsie uniform, but after the comments he made, I can't wait for the day he tries to go over the middle on Thomas, Taylor, Crowder and Porter.
