Would I be a Parcells guy?
As fans of the NFL we fall into the trap that NE and Scott Pioli are somehow geniuses at roster management. When Rick Spielman traded a 4th rounder to move up one spot in the 1st round in 2004 for Vernon Carey, it was widely believed that NE had bluffed the Dolphins into overpaying to move up with the Vikings. That may be true. Spielman did overpay, despite Carey's contributions to the team. But, maybe it was the Vikings who duped Spielman, not NE. Maybe Carey was worth it after all. This is all open for debate. Spielman is now working in Minnesota as the VP of pro personnel, so maybe he isn't universally viewed as the idiot that Dolphins fans are certain he is.
But that isn't my main point. My main point is that maybe NE has just been very lucky for a long time. Sure Belichick is a great coach. Though he stuck with the recently retired Bledsoe as his starter despite the obvious(???) talent of his backup Tom Brady. It took an injury to Bledsoe for Belichick to become the "genius" coach who rode Brady to 3 Super Bowls. Brady has been great. The Patriots have been successful. Whether they are geniuses or not, they have become the "team of the decade" and no other team is even close right now.
But when Randy Moss and Darrel Jackson are being dangled for 4th round picks, you have to question the wisdom of NE and Pioli for giving up a 2nd and 7th to a division rival for a marginal player. Wes Welker, for all his fan support and heart, is no Moss or Jackson. If they can be had for a 4th, and that remains to be seen, Wes's value is no more than a 5th at best. Despite his youth and versatility, Wes is no blue chip superstar. The Dolphins robbed NE on this move. As Dolphin fans lets hope that this is the first move that makes Mueller and Cameron into "geniuses" in the future. Go Phins.
