Well as new Miami GM Jeff Ireland has virtually offered up the number one overall pick for sale, I thought Id have a look at some potential options that might (in an ideal world) open up for us.

Option One Miami trade the number one pick to Detroit in exchange for WR Roy Williams, DT Shaun Rogers and Detroit's first round pick which is at the number 15 spot, and a later conditional pick.

Williams is said to be unhappy with the Lions and would obviously become the number one wideout in Miami, and give Beck (or whoever the QB will be) a genuine proven target. As for Rogers, a two-time Pro Bowler, might be the Lions’ most talented defensive player but is considered expendable in Detroit based on what HC Rod Marinelli preaches. A change of team might rejevunate Rogers and return him to his pro-bowl form. With 2 key positions filled, Miami then can look at either offensive linemen, cornerbacks or linebackers with the 15th pick.

Option Two Miami trade the number one overall pick to Dallas in exchange for both Dallas first round picks (22nd and 28th), a second round pick, LB Bobby Carpenter and the Cowboys first round pick in 2009.

Carpenter was a Parcells pick and a change of scenery may improve his fortunes and would improve LB depth. As for the picks, Miami would then have 5 picks within the top 65 slots as well as getting an additional first round pick in 2009 to go alongside Miami's pick, which will probably be in the top ten anyway.

The Detroit trade gives Miami instant upgrades and experience, and is the short term and quick win option. The Dallas trade will allow Miami to build for a much longer term but obviously doesnt come with any guarentee's that the picks will be successful unlike getting proven NFL players.

I think Miami will seek to trade but can the team find a willing partner for the right price? Probably not but we can have fun speculatiing.

great ideas but with dallas they would not give up three first round picks if theat were the case the deal would be the same minus the 2009 first round pick

the more I think about it the more I want the dallas trade to happen.

there two picks in the twenties, and our 32 plus there second rounder and carpenter.

that is a definate situation we could build on.
We could address some serious needs from 21-32... theres a lot of meat in that range.

one of the three CB's would def be there and fred davis would be a situation there as well.

I would love for us to land a true #1 WR, that would help the offense immensely, but the chances of that happening are slim to none, although the rumors keep popping up.

I read this in Dolphin Digest. It is a stark reminder for all of you. Back in 2004, the NY Giants, picking 4th, traded Philip Rivers to SD Chargers for Eli Manning. The Giants also gave the following to SD: their 3rd pick that year (2004) along with their 1st and 5th round picks in 2005. I agree with Dolphin Digest that IF we trade down to Dallas' spot, we get (based on the Value Point Chart) Dallas' two first rounders in 2008, along with their 2nd round pick and either their 4th or 5th pick (both this year) AND possibly their 1st round pick next year (2009). For everyone (a figure of speech) to say "we would be happy with their 2 first round picks and Barber and that's it," would be insane. Well, that's my take on it.

We will have to get value to trade down. There are a lot of people on this board that do not see that a player like Glenn Dorsey carries a lot more weight than a tackle like (to name a player) Otah as a prospect. That's not a knock on Otah who might be a fine NFL player, but we are giving up a lot in that equation to move down. There is a reason no team has ever traded up to #1 from outside the top ten.

agreed... teams outside the top ten just simply have to give up too much in return to equal out the trade.

dallas, having two first round picks this year, has a bit more leverage, but after thinking about some more, I don't know that those two picks and A player would be enough.

there would certainly have to be at least two players involved, if not more picks in next years draft.

Why would Dallas trade for the number 1, when they could probably get DMcF @ 3? And cheaper...Unless he totally dominates the combine, and it would still be an irresponsable move, I don`t think we draft him...other teams know that

Because Atlanta may very well want to draft McFadden at #3.

I'd love that Detroit trade to happen, especially if Ocho Cinco isn't coming to Miami. Beck needs a large, solid target to throw to.

At #15 we could take a stud corner (Talib? Hard to say before the combine I suppose...), and the best available TE at #32 (might be a reach for anyone but Davis, but Davis probably won't fall this far).

Bam, four huge needs filled with our first two picks.

The Detriot trade is interesting. But I like the Dallas deal better. There is TONS of talent in the late 1st. We could also package some of those picks and move up into the top 10.

I doubt either would happen. Personally, I'll be quite happy if we trade with Dallas for both 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder. I just don't think this draft has any sure-fire HoF'ers that are going to be worth that salary slot. Given the era of the salary cap, I'd rather address a few areas with good solid players. This draft has a lot to offer in terms of CB and OL, so I think we can add a lot of quality if we stock up on picks.

Let's face it, we'll be drafting in the top 10 next year too. I just don't see a Bruce Smith or Carson Palmer there to build around. If we could trade down to somewhere between 3rd - 7th pick, we could probably get a top notch player at a lot less money. But, I don't see the reason for any of those teams to trade up with us as nobody seems to be a must-have for any of the top 7 teams at the moment. Hopefully the combine changes this.
