the steelers showed a "bringing the house" blitz look presnap. gus backpedals and holds on to the ball. gotta be snap bang in that situation. our line is not going to pick that blitz up. gus is what, a 15 year vet? he should know better. even though saban says we blocked the wrong gap on the blitz he knows when a d gives you that look you better get rid of the ball quick. snap bang. snap bang. you cant be back pedaling in a 5 step drop waiting for a guy to get open. throw it at his feet if you have to. just don't do what gus did.

I only saw the play once on replay, but from the look of how he held the ball, his hot read may have been covered completely, or maybe never got off the line........holding the ball as he did, looked like he was trying to get rid of the ball immediately, but wasn't able to.

He also knows its preseason, and that its helpful to huock to see how his O-line would react to that situation. It wasn't a great move by gus, but once again, there was no gameplanning. If you realease the ball right after the snap, and the presnap defensive look was just a hoax and they all drop, you're looking at a pick. He made a choice, it wasn't right. big deal.

i think the blame lies both with Gus AND the o-line.

you can't put all the blame on the QB when the fumble wouldn't have happened if the o-line had done its job.

that said, i think Gus was looking out to his blindside so much he overlooked his right side. if you watch the play Gus was so busy watching the blindside defenders prepping for the blitz, he didn't see the corner sneak off from the right side. Can't put the blame squarely on Gus here. Same thing would have happened to AJ, but he probably would have broken his butt in the process.

If it was his fault or not He is a 30 something year old vet and should know to eat the ball in that situation. He obviously saw the blitz and tried to make a play when he was already in FG range. Trying to do too much in that situation can only end badly. Take the sack and kick the field goal. Gus should know better.

Sounds like a Bledsoe moment.

It's preseason, he wanted to give someone a chance to make a play. being a '30 something year old vet' has probably taught him one thing very closely. PRESEASON DOESN'T COUNT.

I've been vocal about Gus. He just doesn't read bliztes well enough. Pressure gets the best of him and always holds the ball to long or makes in accurate throws. He did in Denver, he's doing it in Miami.

The o-line didn't look solid, but the WR looked good at times.

This site is funny at times. AJ has a bad game, its AJ should get cut. Gus has a bad game, AJ should start.

I'm waiting to get hold of my copy of the game, when I do specifically I wanna see if Carey struggled in this game. The 3-4 that the Steelers use would be a stiff test of read and recognition for Carey, and that's not supposed to be his strong suit.

Is someone sending you one Chris?

you mean if 5 o linemen had blocked 7 blitzers?

you know we haven't gameplanned and so we haven't been observing the opponents' blitzing tendencies before games, and the qb hasn't been given the option to check out of plays... they're just lining up and saban is trying to see what people can do.

now gus could have... should have thrown a pass to the sideline but maybe he was trying to get something done.

You sure seem to have a lock on Gus's mind what are you his little brother? I mean come on your guess is meaningless on what he was trying to do because obviously a reciever didnt get to make a play as he coughed up the ball for 6! and my friends the o-line didnt release the ball from his hands ....he did!

One of the things that make the Steelers defense so successful is their ability to keep the offense off guard. They showed an all out blitz, but they just as easily could have dropped off. If Frerotte expected the blitz, he should have either changed the play to a max protect since he had two backs or looked immediately to dump the ball off to Evans who was running a quick out.

A QB has to have some confidence in the line, otherwise they become gun shy, which is one of the problems Feeley is going through, IMO.

The fact is that McDougle should have been able to slide to his left to pick up the blitzer who caused the fumble. Its unrealistic IMO to expect any but the best QB's to be able to make that play a success given the spilt second or so that Frerotte had.

True, but if you look at it, you'll see that Hadnot went to his left on the snap, and McKinney was at least engaged with his man. Either Hadnot, or the LT totally wiffed on that play. The LT had a TE on his right who was at least going to slow down the end. My guess was that Hadnot was at fault. Sure Ferrotte should have been more aware, but the line could have given him at least a second to think.
