Last December, I was pissed. Not even at the Dolphins. I was done being pissed at the Dolphins after that many years. I was pissed at MYSELF for believing.
Remember the feeling after the Chargers game? The one where we eviscerated what was supposedly a pretty decent team? Everything came together. EVERYTHING. The Sun was shining, the Fins were 5-3, and everything was going our way. There was no WAY we'd get our hearts ripped out again. Right? Right? Wrong.
Branden Albert's knee was first. Then Philbin lost his mind near the end of the Detroit game. Then the D fell apart, and gave up an AVERAGE of over 35 points per game over the last quarter of the season. They gave up almost 500 yards to the Jets and Geno Smith. And, of course, the finale with Wallace and Gibson, during which Wallace apparently asked Gibson to jam his hand up his ### and work him like a puppet. It was so tragic, it was amusing. And I was pissed at myself for letting myself believe again. I should have known better, right? Right.
But up until the start of Free Agency, there was something that stuck in my head. Tannehill doubters, this is the part where you should pay attention. Because I'm going to tell you a secret.
I like Tannehill. And I've seen flashes of things that he does that are special. Things that maybe 2 or 3 QBs in the entire league can do. And he was in a weird spot with his position change, and he's a GOOD dude. And those of us who like him...a lot...see how close he is to being a very special player. But...we wonder, deep down in places we don't like to talk about, "Is this kid ever really going to put it together? God, he's SO close. But is it going to happen? Is he ever going to grab this team by the balls and say, 'Look, ############, this is MY show. I don't give a rat's ass who says what about my long ball. We are scoring. Right ####### now. So get your #### together.'"
And for all the awfulness that was that final game against the Jets, it happened. Did you see it? Because I saw it. It was right after Cameron Wake almost killed Geno Smith. On the ensuing drive, Sheldon Richardson did very nearly the same thing to Tannehill. He PLANTED him. And then Tanny got up. And he pulled grass out of his face mask. And he was PISSED. I was watching the game over my in-laws's house. And my father-in law saw it.
FIL: "Wow. He's pissed."
Me: "He is!" <long pause> "I didn't even know he COULD get pissed. I've never seen him pissed off before!"
FIL: "Well, he's pissed now."
And he was. He was pissed. And I saw it. The attitude of "We're scoring. Right ####### now." And they did. Of course, they pass went to Clay instead of Wallace, Wallace and Tanny got into it, and Wallace never played another down for the Fins. And the Fins lost the game.
And, of course, we were stuck with Philbin. We already knew that. And then the other shoe dropped; they kept Coyle. And then....the kick in the balls: Tannenbaum. I was done. I was *out.* Still a fan, of course, but holding the team at arm's length. I wasn't getting emotionally involved anymore.
The Miami Dolphins had become he psychotic ex-girlfriend who was no longer worth the fantastic sex because of just how completely insane she was. That's where I was. Done.
And then...slowly...smart things started happening. I watched from a mostly disinterested stance; a person who's seen enough Game of Thrones episodes to know that you probably shouldn't get attached to a favorite character. "Wait. Could they really sign Suh? Hmm. They might be in contention for Suh. Wait. They're the FAVORITES for Suh? Holy ####. They signed Suh. Wait. They got Kenny Stills? They got rid of Wallace?" And slowly...I've come back around. Because pretty much every move this offseason has made me go like this:
And then they signed Jennings. Jennings is not a spectacular player at this point in his career. You know what he is? He's a SMART signing. He's not a true #1. But now the Fins have Jennings, Stills, Landry and Cameron as their four primary receiving options. Look at that again.
And now we're six days from the draft. And every single thing I've seen this offseason makes me excited. And I wonder...if I hadn't become so jaded...how excited would I be?
And this is me now:

So I'm all in.
Again. Because I wonder now, about all this "continuity" BS that we assumed was smoke the organization tried to blow up our asses..."what if it's not smoke? What if they're right?"
Get your hate ready, haters. Because I'm gonna be a ray of unstoppable ####### sunshine.
Again.
