First off, lets talk about free agency. Ill begin with our free agents, and then move into other free agents. The team needs to resign Vernon Carey. I know he didnt play well at times last year and took a noticable step back from 2007, but he showed me enough in '07 that he can be a probowl caliber RT in this league.
Im not a huge Channing Crowder fan, but honestly, he is the best young free agent ILB. If he can be signed for 4-7 mil a year, then I think the Fins need to resign him, although I think we need to bring in a veteran and draft one as well.
Andre' Goodman and Renaldo Hill should be resigned cheaply and are expendable if not resigned. The secondary, in my opinion, is the Dolphins biggest area of concern and must be addressed this offseason. Last year they played well, but it was with smoke and mirrors and must improve this year.
If Carolina resigns or puts the franchise tag on Jordan Gross, then the Dolphins must resign Carey. Khalif Barnes and Stacey Andrews would be secondary options as both are still young and might come a little cheeper.
Jahri Evans from New Orleans and Jason Brown from Baltimore are the two best young free agent guards. I like Brown more, but I think he would be much more expensive than Evans and he is more likely to be resigned. Another unlikely scenary would be to sign another RT and move Vernon Carey to guard which he played in Miami in college.
Miami needs to add at least 3 offensive lineman in free agency and through the draft.
The Dolphins need to add at least 1 and more likely 2 WR to this team. A large redzone threat is needed to play opposite Ginn and Bess. I know T.J. Houshmandzadeh is the sexy choice for most of you, but he is going to command a huge paycheck. Miles Austin from Dallas is a restricted free agent and has the size that the Dolphins would be looking for in a red zone threat. He is 6-3, 215 pounds. I know all the Beck-haters want to trade him to the Cowboys for Bobby Carpenter, but a deal involving Beck for Austin would be better and help the team more. Devery Henderson from New Orleans would be a nice addition.
The Dolphins need to add depth and youth to their DL. Chris Canty from Dallas is the perfect player to play 3-4 end. He is 6-7, 290 pounds. I know everyone wants Haynesworth and Peppers and I do too, but realistically since we are not playing Madden, Canty is a more realistic prospect. If healthy, Marcus Tubbs from Seattle would be a cheap and intriguing prospect at DT. He has good size to be a NT, 6-4 325 pounds, and he has first round talent. His problem is that he has been plagued by injuries in his career. He hasnt played in almost 2 years, so if he is healthy, he might be a good signing.
At LB, Karlos Dansby is the best player who has a realistic shot to hit freeagency. He must be contacted and brought in by the Dolphins if not resigned by the Cards. Zach Thomas could be brought back in for a year as a stopgap ILB.
At CB, Dunta Robinson from Houston, Oshiomogho Atogwe from the Rams, and Bryant McFadden from Pittsburgh are all young talented CBs who will be free agents this year. Im not even going to mention Nnamdi Asomugha from the Raiders because its unlikely he makes it out of Oakland, because with Deangelo Hall being released last year, Oakland will franchise him if he doesnt accept a longterm deal. If Miami could sign 2 of these players it would improve their secondary enough that they wouldnt need to address CB early in the draft. Its unlikely that Ravens SS Dawan Landry makes it to free agency, but he would be a great signing. Jermaine Phillips from Tampa Bay is another player to watch. He has played both safety positions but was injured this year.
And now for the fun part, the mock draft.
1. Rey Maualuga ILB, USC Its questionable that he will be here when the Phins pick, but if he is, they must snag him. James Laurinaitis, ILB Ohio State, or Aaron Maybin, who is a hybrid DE/OLB from Penn State, would be other possibilities.
2. Duke Robinson OG, Oklahoma He is massive at 6-5 330 pounds.
2. William Moore FS, Missouri He is a big safety who didnt have a good senior bowl week, so its expected he will drop to the second round.
3. Ron Brace DT, Boston College His neighbor on the line, BJ Raji gets all the publicity, but Brace was just as important on the DL for BC last year.
4. Patrick Turner WR, USC Hes a big, 6-5 225, redzone target the Dolphins could use.
5. Kevin Barnes CB, Maryland
7. Ramon Foster OT, Tennessee
7. Lee Robinson OLB, Alcorn State
7. Ra'Shon Harris DT, Oregon
Well guys, there you go. Let me know what you think.
