The guy makes me pissed sometimes when he blows some plays, but then all of a sudden he will make a good play here and there.

He seems so inconsistent. Yesterday, he seemed to get blow past by on a couple of running plays and then all of a sudden he is the one chasing down Julius Jones down at the 5 yard line.

It seems he's got the motor and agressiveness, but lacks the ability.

He needs to be more consistent. :err:

thoughts?

this is still his first seaon at LB... i think he's been doing well... i dont favor having 2 OLBs that blitz real well but dont cover... (porter, Roth)
he is very explosive, high motor and very intense... he over pursues though, he's jsut that crazy and mean... i dont know how to coach him, but he's a hell of a player

Yeah it seems like he is a monster some plays, but then on some plays he gets pushed around. I was really pumped when Roth was the one to chase down Jones on the 5 yard line though. I couldnt believe he was the only one chasing him down the field, and it really suprised me to see that. He looked like a T-Rex chasing down something to eat .

He's still learning the LB position. He'll get better and better as time goes on, it's a tough transition when you've been a DE for most of your career.

That and all the weight he gained to play 3-4 DE. When he loses some of that it should have a huge impact.

Stop it.... negative, negative, negative, and none of the opinions most people would agree with..

he could always be quicker, but his weight has nothing to do with some of his inabilities. he is should be able to stop the run at 280 LB OLB. he can not. yes he makes a couple plays here and there, but he gets to wide sometimes like hes trying to pass rush, which he can not do at all either, or gets pushed around to open up a hole. it definitely a whole we need to fill in the offseason.

watching him play, i'm thinking anyone could do what he does: plug up the edge

the OLB position is the second most important in this defence, the NT being the #1 player. A good OLB will nullify any outside runs and he'll create havoc on passing plays either with tremendous pass rushing skills or being able to drop effectively.

Roth can't:
- rush the passer
- drop effectively
and the other thing we saw a whole lot lately is roth being outran to the outside. Remember that marshawn lynch touchdown ? Roth sure can plug up the Offensive tackle inside but when the RB bounces to the sideline, roth simply doesn't have the speed to change direction and chase the ball carrier to make the play in the backfield.

Roth has made some good plays but you'd expect a lot more out of an OLB in this defence, just look at joey porter. I know he's a former probowler and quite a player, but 2½ sack is not acceptable... Roth sees less playing time, but he's got to find a way to get to the quarterback when he has an opportunity and he HAS to keep contain ! or else he'll be a scratch after his contract is done (personnaly, i think that's what's going to happen and we'll draft a OLB in the first two rounds this year... maybe we'll resign roth if he comes in cheap for depth purposes but that's it)

Sounds like you been playing too much madden.

roth doesnt play on the weak side guys. porter is the stud in this defense, its his job to get after the qb.. roth does his job pretty well considering this is the first year he has played olb.
