I don't know if this was already discussed or not...
Does anyone know what the conditions were on the conditional draft pick? 'Cause my speculation is that by John Owens not making the team, that this somehow improves our ability to reap the rewards from the conditions under us receiving a draft pick from the Bears (for instance, maybe the terms said that if Owens didn't make the team than we were entitled to a 6th rounder from Chicago, but if he did make the team, we got nothing).
This is the only way I can make sense out of trading away Ayanbadejo for a guy that we cut as soon as he got here. If so, then I think it's a smart move by Saban by grabbing an extra draft pick. So the trade was basically Ayanbadejo for the draft pick, whatever it becomes, assuming the conditions have been met for us to receive it, which I'm guessing it has and that this was Nick's plan all along...
