Years ago an NFL scout whom I’ve trusted for years told me the best teams are proactive instead of reactive. And he cited examples.
He talked of how former Green Bay general manager Ron Wolf often drafted quarterbacks though he had a good starting quarterback in Brett Favre. Wolf drafted a quarterback in seven of eight drafts from 1992 to 1999.
(The investment in picks such as Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck and Aaron Brooks later were traded for higher draft picks).
The scout talked about how you don’t sign a Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker because the Steelers have historically been great at evaluating their linebacker corps, and when they’re done with a linebacker you probably shouldn’t want him, either.
“They get rid of their linebackers a year early rather than a year too late,” he often said.
(The Dolphins learned this truth with their Joey Porter and Lawrence Timmons experiences).
And here’s another way to be proactive: Get out ahead of things on the contract front.

It’s easy to say “resign players early.” But what if they aren’t willing to sign for a discount? ALL players want to make as much money as possible. So yeah... if players aren’t willing to sign early in their careers for a discount, then let’s trade them. The problem is that we don’t have a Brady or Big Ben so it will be difficult to compete. In theory, this article makes sense but it doesn’t necessarily make sense for us given our predicament.

Armando is so right on the money with this article. The Dolphins organization lacks long term vision. That's why you only get an occasional winning season here or there but no long term sustainability.

Teams with average QB play can be really good when everything falls their way, but the next year they fall back to the pack and another average QB team takes it's place. The perennial playoff teams all have elite or ++ QB's that stick around.

I agree with most of what Mando's saying. NE would rather let a player go a year early than a year late like we do.
As far as Parker, I'd not trade him for a 5th round pick. He'd get the whole year to see if he can get it together.
As far as drafting QB's.......it needs to start this year and not stop. We need to draft a QB in the first 3 rounds and this is coming from a Tannehill supporter.
Forget about drafting a QB in round 7. Draft one that has a real chance to help us win. If you hit on a QB then you still take a flyer at least every other year just in case.

Armando has a habit of leaving out fital information when he is pushing a personal{narrative}agenda. If an organization is to achieve long term success you cannot fire a head coach/GM/ every few years. You have to allow the HC time to hire his coaches and sometimes it will take him a few years to get the perfect mix{i.e. he has to wait for some to be free of their contracts}. The HC needs time to draft the players that fit his system/are true leaders of men{self motivated hard workers}. The HC needs the Owner/Executive Vice President of Football Operations to share the vision of the Head Coach without interference of a personal agenda. ****I believe Miami has finally found the correct HC. He has evaluated his roster over the 1st 2 years and has made the difficult decisions that had to be made this offseason.{i.e. trading/or cutting players who either cost more than they are worth to the team or are not true selfless team leaders}. Like many Miami fans the only loss I struggled with was Suh but I know in my soul that it is bad business have a DT cost 26 million in any calendar year. Miami has finally found a HC ready and able to make the tough decisions even it many of the fans do not like or understand the decision.

Really? Cus for a while, the Chargers haven't done squat. Last year was the first time in a while the Saints were relevant. Roethlisberger has the best WR and RB in the NFL and a solid OL. Detroit hasn't really done much despite having Stafford. Matt Ryan has Julio Jones and two great RBs, Russell Wilson had one of the best defenses in the NFL on his side for a while.

How many QBs in the NFL are elite and can do it all with very little around them? Brees can't. Rivers can't. Wilson can't. There are two QBs in the NFL who despite everything going on around them can make it work. Brady and Rodgers.

Rivers is a HOF worthy QB and the Chargers have a losing record since 2010. Brees is a HOF, elite QB who, despite his prowess, couldn't play his way to making his team great in the last 5 years. Stafford is a very good QB but the Lions haven't really been consistently good or great.

Rivers gets the benefit of the doubt, when the Saints were sucking it up, nobody questioned Brees. Stafford is one of the highest paid QBs in the league and is highly regarded.

Yet, some of you guys want to get rid of a QB because when he doesn't win, it's his fault. But when Rivers doesn't win, the team around him isn't great. Or when Brees doesn't win, his defense is awful. Or when Stafford doesn't win, the line isn't good enough.

Yet when Miami and Tannehill don't win, **** THAT MOTHER****ING TANNEHILL! CUT HIS ASS AND GET AN ELITE QB ALREADY.

DAN ****ING MARINO couldn't even win a god damn super bowl, yet some of you guys say elite QB play will get you over the top. Dan was as elite as it gets and he never got his team to a super bowl. But tell me again how it's all up to the elite QB to get you there.

Give Tannehill LeVeon Bell/Antonio Brown, or Julio and Devonta Freeman, or the Broncos defense a few years ago, or the Cowboys offensive line, and this team is in the playoffs.

I think we tried to go get Ron Wolf not too long ago. It could have made us a better team by now. This year appears to be a reset, possibly to going mostly acquiring through the draft. Get away from bad contracts and start fresh.
If they pick the right players we can keep them for 5+ years. We need the smarts for that.

Chargers have had 6 playoff appearances in the past decade, Saints - 6, Detroit - 3 (Stafford is average, regardless of how the media props him up), Atlanta - 7, Miami - 2.

This 3 year plan to win the super bowl is not enough time to recover from all the changes this organization has made. It can take 3 years just to develop a rookie QB. Time is what it will take to heal this team and to actually see what somebody can do.

Mando article is correct. People need separate their personal feelings towards the QB podition and Tannehill and what the article advocate doing to the rest of the roster.
Phillips is contract worry but should it be considering the amount of good not great DL that are still FAs?

Can this be saved somewhere and be required reading every time a poster types the name "Tannehill" in a post?

Here here...order order

The key is learning how to draft well or even decent would help. It doesn't matter who you resign when all of your draft picks for the most part are average or worse. I'd love to see this team really kill the draft this year by getting 2 guys who look like they are gonna be pro bowlers and then another couple quality starters.
