By looking at this 40 of the 71 #1 overall picks have at least made the pro bowl(excluding eli manning, mario williams since they're still young). Just wanted to see what you guys thought of our chances picking up a great player with the pick judging by the list.

also interesting that the only 2 OT to be taken at number one in the past 30 some years had a combined 14 pro bowls between them. I'm still not sure who I want us to take, but if Jake Long can be a dominating run blocker and hold his own in pass pro, I would love to have him continue that tradition.

The last 10 years 8 of the 10 #1 picks have been quaterbacks is that a sign?

Yes. The failure or mediocre rate is higher than the success rate with QB #1 picks.

Successes Mediocre/Unknown/Busts

P. Manning Couch
Palmer Vick
E. Manning (only this year) Carr
Smith
Russell
Smith and Russell are in the second group not the first.

Its a sign that there is a serious lack of talent at that position in the league. Only about 20 teams(estimation) are in a position to be comfortable with their current starter IMHO. That is they have a guy that they should feel if they build a good team he is capable of leading them to a title.

It says when you are in position to draft yourself a franchise guy you better get him. Otherwise you could wind up like say........THE PHINS and go for a decade or so shuffling bums in and out of your starting lineup at QB.(Wasting draft picks in trades and spending later round picks on longshots etc etc..)

Lack of talent at the QB position in the league. Serious. Better get one when you have the chance, especially if you dont have one and have been looking for one for about 10 years.

That’s a great theory, I think... so lets say Russell and Quinn came out in 2006 and then lets say the experts dubbed Beck the number 1 rated quarterback in last years draft... I guess that would make Becks chances at making it in the NFL much greater than it is right now.

I really can't imagine the 1st quarterback in the draft being taken in the 2nd round. All the Hoopla of Beck being the only good prospect would most certainly push him into the first round and after panic over him being one of the ONLY prospects - who knows where he might be taken. Maybe he is taken by the Raiders with the first pick.

Who knows….but heck if that happened he would have had a much greater chance of succeeding in the NFL! No sense in taking prospects on a person by person basis, I say we go with the odds.

WV, I have to give you credit. You must read every single thing posted on this site and sieze every chance to promote your boy Ryan. I am so punch-drunk from your onslaught that you are starting to CONVINCE me!! I still think one of the Longs is the guy, but you are one TENACIOUS fella.

This is hilarious, Well if Matt Ryan was the clear cut #1 QB I would not be against it but how far is Ryan ahead of Brohm? you have a serious man crush on Ryan.

(sarcasm) I hope you realize that it doesn’t matter what the talent level is of this years class, if you are the top rated quarterback you are the top rated quarterback and deserve the millions of guaranteed money you will receive. And no, it doesn’t matter how many holes you have on your team you should still take a chance on the guy. Who needs and offensive or defensive line anyway (/sarcasm)

Pace has some mighty big shoes to fill and I don't think anyone expects Long to fill them. The other guy was in 1968, think of that what you will.

You might want to note that only one of the last four to be picked at #2 have made the pro bowl.

I dont see where I mentioned Ryans name in the post you responded to. I was just pointing out facts. You guys seem to be calling Ryans name out. Guess you guys must think he is worthy of at least mentioning when someone makes a post about drafting franchise QBs.

And when have you heard anyone(besides around here) question whether or not he is the clear cut top rated QB in this draft?

Brohm will go as high as pick 8 and no lower than late first round IMHO. Ryan will go as high as #1 overall and pick 8. So theres your answer to how far ahead Ryan is of Brohm.

Call it a man crush if you want to. I just want to pencil Ryan in as our starter for the next dozen or so years and forget about the problem of not having a solid QB for a while so we can put a team together and take this proud franchise back where it belongs.......the head of the class in the AFC EAST!!! Consistant playoff contenders.

No, because in those years, QB was the Teams' biggest need, while also being the BPA available. That is not the case this year. Chris Long & Vernon Gholston are the BPA available this year and at positions of need for us, which is why one them THEM will be the pick. I would look to 2006 as more of an indicator or a sign of things to come.
